Hello Everyone, Im Kayla and I am very new to Quakers. I was in PetSmart the other day and was looking at the birds because my wife said something about wanting a bird. There was also some other customers who were standing there with us looking at birds and over heard us talking about what kind of bird we wanted to get. They spoke up and said the best birds are Quaker Parrots. I said Ive never heard of those and were would I get one. The guy said the Bird shop down the road has them. So at that point after him telling me all about his 2 Quakers I said I was gonna do some research. I have researched these birds for 2 days now and I have fallen in love with them. Ive called the bird store and she is ordering me a baby Quaker. Im so ready to get my baby Quaker and continue learning about these beautiful birds. This website has taught me a lot that I needed to know and Im also about to purchase the Quaker Parrot Care Made Easy book.
Thanks to everyone who helps run this site to help us beginners. And also all the fellow members who reply and help everyone learn more!!

Welcome to the forum, and Quakers, and parrots in general! I was hooked from my first interaction with a parrot, and they have never failed to fascinate me and enrich my life. I hope it is the same for you.

Welcome to the forum. I had to laugh at the book title "Quaker Parrot Care Made Easy" - quakers have their own book - "Human Slave Training Manual". Like you, I had never heard of quakers either until I went into a bird shop to look at sun conures and lo and behold, this little green and grey creature crawled up me and refused to leave. That was my first introduction to quakers. I have had Shah for 11 years now - and I am still asking questions on this forum. So don't be shy in asking us questions - you will find that quakers are extremely intelligent and can be delightful companions.

Hi Kayla and 'soon-to-be-obtained' baby quaker! What colour did you order? I am like Jan, I saw my first quaker parrot in a pet shop while browsing for other birds/things. Immediately I saw this QP, I thought "What a beautiful bird..." and the rest is history - I didn't buy that particular one, but ordered one from a breeder. You are right, the Forum members are great in trying to assist with any questions, so ask away! Let us know when you're picking up your new friend.

Thanks everyone for welcoming me and my soon to be baby Quaker. I have to wait til March-April before my baby will be able to be ordered because that is when the pet shop owner does her ordering and that's when the babies are available to her. Im thinking I am going to go with the Green Quaker but I also really love the Blue ones so really whatever I can order ill go with. At the moment I am just ordering everything it will need as in cage, toys, etc. so I can be ready when baby quaker is ready to come home.
Does anyone have any recommendation of anything I should get to be ready for baby quaker?

Welcome Kayla! I'm glad you've found our forum-- it's a really great place to learn and talk about these little guys. Quakers are really wonderful little creatures. You're in for a treat!
All of that said, they are a huge responsibility and can be quite challenging at times as well! So please feel free to ask as many questions you might have along the way!

Hi Kayla and welcome to the forum! I'm also very new to quakers! I was planning to get some cockatiels, so I went to the pet shop to look for cages (as a friend breeds cockatiels). Well in the shop there were these 8 little blue quaker parrots. I too fell in love with them. I did heaps (and heaps) of investigation before getting Skye. We've had him for a little over 3 weeks now and he's just gorgeous! Best of luck when you get your little one

Hello Kayla. I hope you and your QP get on famously. I inherited Chuckie several years ago and the forum has been a huge help with guiding me in handling some of his "set in his way" bird behaviors. Before I found this forum, I raided the local library several times for books on QPs in particular and on parrot psychology in general. I found Guide to the Quaker Parrot by Matti Sue Athan very helpful. If I recall correctly, she a lot of guidance on training as well as habituating a new bird to your home. I look forward to hearing about your new bird.

Hi again, Kayla. As far as being ready for your quaker goes, it sounds like you've ordered what you need already. You might want to consider two cages - a day cage and a night cage. Our QP, Bonnie, has a day cage in our lounge room. She also has a night cage in the other end of the house, so she can go to sleep at 7pm and have 12 hours of quiet (away from our TV in the lounge room).
