I was wondering do any of your birds like to chew on cinnamon sticks? Treat stores sell them and they are in some seed mixes and on other bird forums I have seen people say theirs do but they aren't quakers. I was getting treat supplies at the mennonite store nearby that sells mostly organic stuff and saw these little miniature cinnamon sticks that looked perfectly sized for a small parrot to hold on to. When I handed one to Bishop he saw it as an enemy that needed destroyed rather than something edible and has been after that attacking everything else while he's at it. My hands, my shirt, my pants, the chair, the carpet, the sheets on my bed, and of course the cinnamon sticks are all currently suffering his wrath. He's now pushed some of my sheets into a "mountain" and is sitting atop his throne awaiting anyone to challenge him and not even I am allowed to get him down from there.

Wow, catnip for Quakers! Both of my birds really enjoy a variety of Higgins' green treats that have quite a bit of cinnamon in them. I recently bought some real cinnamon flavoring that I'm going to add to their bread one of these days, too, but I've never tried the sticks.

He loves cinnamon mixed into foods but apparently not when it isn't ground and mixed with other things. He finally came off of his sheet pile which now has holes in it and I stuck the cinnamon stick that is now in three pieces into his food bowl. Maybe he will eventually perceive it as food that way but he's currently eating around it.

Interesting, I will have to try that for Casey. Maybe the next batch of treats can have cinnamon in them.

Hi guys, just googled cinnamon for birds - it is quite good for them but in moderation (once or twice a week). There are 3 different types of cinnamon (never knew that) and they recommend organic cinnamon. I will definitely be getting some for Shah to add to those recipes that were posted on this forum recently.

Yes it is good for them but the common spice most often referred to as cinnamon contains a blood thinner so it should be fed only on occasion. This is the kind of cinnamon I think I have and is the only one I could find.

Ralph likes cinnamon toast, which is a favorite treat he gets now and then. He mostly eats the cinnamon off the top of the toast. My sister-in-law sent him some cinnamon sticks after reading that they were good for parrots to play with and chew on. Ralph incorporated a couple sticks in one of his building projects, but was not interested otherwise.

I'm with you Gary... Oscar played with it... dropped it... and never wanted another. At least Ralph used his to build with.

It's hard to find the Ceylon cinnamon sticks in stores, but I actually managed to find them at a local grocery chain called Mom's Organic Market around here. The common kind of cinnamon, Cassia cinnamon, can actually be dangerous to the liver in large amounts.

I love reading these posts, they make me laugh so much. I wonder if Byron will have building projects and sheet mountains and cloth drawers and other idiosyncratic tendencies? Probably. They are really are just people of a different species aren't they?

The only safe cinnamon for parrots is CEYLON cinnamon. Cassia cinnamon, the one most commonly sold in grocery stores is actually a different plant and is not safe at all because it contains a blood thinner. I ordered Ceylon cinnamon from tge Spice Shop for my M2, and he loves it! That is the only kind I buy now for all of us. It's delicious.
