Against the vet's advice, I have been giving Shah an occasional raw cashew or two. Unfortunately, they have caused a problem in that they haven't digested properly and caused gas in his gut. He will be okay but needs to go back for a check up in a couple of weeks. I don't seem to get it when the vet says DON'T feed the birds such and such and I stop for a while and then reintroduce it. In all cases it has come back to bite me and cost a small fortune at the vet. I am listening to him this time.

Please don't beat yourself up, Jan. Shah is OK and now you know that you can't 'cheat' even a little (most of us do)...sorry that it's been so stressful on you. Let us know how he progresses.

Yeah, we all have our moments of giving the birds things that we know they probably shouldn't have. Cupcake eats way too many little pieces of pizza crust, and probably too many little almond pieces as well. It's hard to deprive them of things they really love to snack on. But at least now you know you can't budge on it.

I am as guilty as the rest. Right now Oscar is chewing up a plastic pen. I know he shouldn't have this but he was just so proud when he found it that I couldn't resist letting him have it. I am a sucker for love.

Zach and I are guilty, too. Actually, I should probably get some blood work done on Chewy, because he gets at least one (sometimes two) whole almonds every night at bedtime. He seems healthy, but we know better than to give him so much fat.

Add me to the wall of shame. It's so hard not to do the things that you know they enjoy. I don't have children, and I like to fancy that I would have been a strict parent, but maybe not.

Very easy to relate to. I'm still trying to get Yoshi off of eating seed, so I know I shouldn't be giving him sunflower seed treats or nutri berries, but it's extremely tough not to!

I guess in some ways I am lucky with my QP. He adores fresh lettuce as snack, likes organic multigrain cereal, green beans, baked beans (although I haven't given him those for ages since I cannot eat them), pasta (in very small amounts and no sauce), and even, to my amazement, cooked Quinoa. I used to give him cashews, again since I cannot have, he doesn't get them. I hope Shah continues to get better.

Wow, bruce... I wish Cupcake ate fresh lettuce ever... Granted she's very good about eating her cucumber and sprouts every day, but those are not treats to her, they are staples. She still wants her little bits of almond as treats... and sometimes she gets little organic corn puff cereal pieces that I know she shouldn't have... but she loves them.

Aaron, are almonds better than cashews for QPs? I buy unsalted roasted almonds for myself, wasn't sure ok for Chuckie.

The vet told me that almonds are better - they cannot have the skin on them or be slivered. As Shah is refluxing from cashews, I don't want to take the risk with him eating any nuts at all. Check with your avian vet and see what he recommends. Shah is now on a diet that suits him and his medical condition - it involves a little bit of sterilised budgie seed and about 4 sterilised sunflower seeds but the main part of his diet is made up of fruit and vegetables.

Almonds are a better choice, for them and us. Peppy won't touch his, but my grey loves them. I've never tried the blanched almonds. I buy the unsalted and roast them myself. They have gotten so expensive since the California drought!

Yeah, I think almonds are definitely a less decadent nut than cashews.

I didn't know that I shouldn't have been giving the 'skin' of the almond. I've been buying raw almonds and Bonnie just munches one as it is...whoops. Jan, why shouldn't they be slivered? Just curious.

Hi Biteybird, I am not sure why they cant be slivered as I cant remember what the vet said about them. I have to see him again next week to make sure Shah is getting better so if I remember, I will ask him. The thing is that we do give our quakers things we shouldn't - it was just unfortunate that Shah couldn't cope. Doesn't mean that it applies to all quakers. Shah started mutilating 3 years ago so it is my fault that I didn't look further into the cause of the problem. If your quakers are doing okay with their "treats" then I see no need to change them.
