So Rio is a bit nippy. He likes to be out and I've had him on my shoulder sitting. He nips my neck, lips and cheek. When he nips I say Ow! Not loud or screachy just so he knows it hurts. When he nibbles I go ah ah! And he has learned in the 2 days we've had him not to nip. But how do I cut down other than ah ah and Ow! On the upside. He has learned to say Ow! Should I just continue doing the ah ah?

It's usually recommend to give no reaction or else you are only reinforcing the behavior. When the bird bites set him on the cage and walk away, don't give any other reaction. He will learn that biting means he won't get attention. Just be sure to go back to him after a few minutes or else he won't understand what he did wrong with the short attention span that they have.

So this is my game plan as I have a friend with several parrots. If he gets nippy as you said put him straight back to his cage without talking to him. No shoulder time as this is when he's bitten. And when he is ready to come out of the cage I give him a treat. After he steps up. I don't know how he was treated previously. So trust could be a big issue for him.

What you are doing sounds good, though it will require patience and consistency for him to get the idea (depends, as you say, how he was treated previously and how smart & willing he is). Bonnie still nips me (and bites my husband), despite us getting her at 8 weeks old - another long, story there...
