This is our first Quaker Baby Rio! We got him from a young mom who was going to school and had a toddler. She thought he would make a great pet till she realized she didn't have the time for him. He's learning to say Hello already. But isn't hand tamed yet. But he will be soon. We still need to get him used to playing with toys and good fruits and veggies also as they were feeding him just parakeet seed and millet. Glad to be here to learn from all of you!

Welcome to you and Rio - he's gorgeous! Yep, quakers are definitely not the traditional pet and people often don't realize that until they've gone ahead and got one. I hope you enjoy the forum and please ask any questions you wish!

Welcome to you and Rio as well. She sure is pretty... I adore all the blue quakers. She looks healthy but with any new pet, I would not hesitate to bring her for a check up at the vet and get her introduced to them.
Don't be surprised if she doesn't want to play with her toys... many QP's would rather interact with whoever is in the room than play with toys.
Good luck and we are all here if you need any assistance at all.

Welcome the both of you! Rio sure is an adorable little fella!
I'm glad the previous owner gave him up at a younger age. It saddens me when I see people who made impulse purchases with these little guys, and the birds end up being neglected for so long. I wish people would research before buying one. I actually spent nearly a year researching all types of parrots before deciding which kind I wanted, and making the purchase.
I look forward to hearing and seeing more of Rio!

Thank you for the welcome! We don't know if Rio is a male/female. But I'm ok with that! He is from a hobby breeder and the breeder told the lady she thinks he's a male because he/she was smaller than the others in the clutch. But I'm ok not knowing either way. I do know Rio's b-day though. It's Oct.13!

I think Rio is adorable . I have never seen a blue colored QP in person. According to my vet, I am the only person with a QP in town. I am fairly new to the forum myself, and have found it to be full of good advice and encouragement. Welcome.

Welcome! Your Rio is a proper cutie. I don't know whether Byron is male or female either. We're going with male because that's what they called him in the shop, though they had no idea either. Unless you're breeding, it really doesn't matter. How's it going with the hand taming? This forum is so great. I've only had my Byron for two months now, but I love him to pieces. Whenever I've had any questions, or worries, or just needed a good moan, these guys have been there for me with all their amazing advice and experience. Everyone is really welcoming an even when you do something really silly or have made a mistake, people here are brilliant at correcting you quickly without making you feel bad. All of us care immensely about our little feathered babies and it's lovely to know so many people are hear to help you best of luck with your little lovely!
Quick Edit: You probably know this already cos you seem pretty clued up, but Quakers are prone to fatty liver disease and seed mixes have high fat content. We've switched Byron to Kaytee's rainbow pellet mix. It is originally formulated for cockatiels but my vet said it was really a good mix for any parakeet. I started off mixing in a little bit with his seed mix and gradually converted him over two weeks. It has all the necessary vitamins and minerals he needs, and he has a wet food mix every day too.(I make it myself: boiled sweet potato and carrot, mashed and mixed with boiled peas, boiled quinoa, mixed pulses and a sprinkling of crushed oyster shell for calcium). He also really likes parsnip, grape (though these are really sugary, so not too often!) and apple.
It took him a while to get used to the pellets and I ended up just not giving him any fresh food for one morning so he would get hungry enough to eat the pellets, but now he's tried them, he really likes them.
It also took him a while to get used to his toys, but he loves anything he can destroy. We've found it a bit hit and miss because some toys he loves, some he just ignores. A lot of it has been getting to know his individual personality and the kind of thing he likes to play w ith (those returns were Byron's little contrib ution to my not so quick edit!)
