Welcome Natalie/Captain! I don't have much knowledge to share on weaning, but wanted to say hello, and good luck! Keep us posted on how things go.

Welcome to you and Bernie! It's very nice of you to do this for him. We give Cupcake bits of rice cake periodically... i try to avoid giving her much of the salty ones as Easttex said, but it's totally fine.

We've called the ASPCA poison control hotline in the past-- seems similar to the link that Easttex posted, not sure they can help... www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-controlI don't have any suggestions beyond what the others have said, unfortunately... but good luck with your little one, sorry we can't be of more help!

Alright, I turned it off. I think it's for the best. Hopefully more people will post as a result.

That's a good point. It really doesn't serve much functional purpose, although I do see you just gave someone advice in the past couple of days, so I guess I will give them a few days to make sure they see it. Does anyone else have any thoughts/objections on the concept of removing the shoutbox?

Wow! You've done a great thing caring for this little one in need. I agree, this does sound like a pet. The others have given you good advice. Keep us posted on how the vet visit goes!

It could potentially be effective to move it, but it doesn't look like the location is configurable. You can turn it off, but not change the location.

I would love to allow Cupcake on the floor, but it's just too dangerous in this apartment. Too much going on in way too small of a space. I know she'd like to run around down there, but she'll have to deal with getting along by flight She tries to go down there every once in a while, but the vast majority of the time she doesn't bother because she knows she'll get scooped. I accidentally stepped on my parents' Cockatiel when I was 11 or so... he was rooting around under the table and I didn't know he was there. Luckily I only stepped on the base of his tail, and while he did clearly make a very pained noise, he managed to get away with no major injuries, but all of his tail feathers fell out at once. I'm sure this contributes to my drive to ensure Cupcake stays off the floor

Cupcake has fluctuated between 101g and 108g over the past 4 years... We haven't changed much about her diet over the years, though... vet doesn't seem alarmed at all at her weight... Checks her keel every checkup and says she is in good shape. If it goes above 108, I will probably modify her diet a bit (less pumpkin seeds).. but some fluctuation definitely seems to be normal.

I agree that Easttex is giving you good advice. It sounds like hormonal behavior.. hormones can cause all kinds of aggressive/protective behavior. You want to do everything you can to keep those hormones suppressed. Twelve hours of darkness a day is a very good place to start. As long as you are having behavioral problems, don't stray from that at all. In our home, Cupcake sleeps in her own room where it is quiet and dark, which definitely helps. We use a smaller sleep cage for her so that she can be easily transported from room to room. Also, make sure he does not have access to any locations that might feel like a nest to him. No cozy spaces of any sort.
Good luck.. keep us posted!
