Will they all be uncaged in the bird room, Jan?

Boy howdy, I really feel like a loser now! I can't believe I forgot everyone's Hatchday, Jan! It wasn't that long ago that you mentioned it. I owe you some serious yummies!

I am very sorry to read of the plight of poor Sam, and agree that he needs to be placed somewhere else without delay. I have a link to rescue groups in South Carolina: bird.rescueshelter.com/SouthCarolinaThey are not all bird specific, and I would be careful about trying to place him with a group that doesn't have expertise with parrots, but it's a place to start. Even if none of them can take Sam, someone might be able to direct you to other groups. Florida has a thriving bird rescue network, so if you can't find one in SC, I would look south. If if I had to relinquish a bird, my number one choice would be The Gabriel Foundation. Unfortunately they are nowhere near Sam (Colorado), but they do have a lot of information on their site. If you're trying to evaluate a shelter closer to home, you can look at their checklist to get an idea of the questions to ask. It's more comprehensive than you will probably find possible to follow completely, but it may help you. thegabrielfoundation.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Recommending-Other-Parrot-Welfare-Organizations-Branded-2014.02.20.pdfIt might be a fruitless to ask, but as a vet tech, your sister should have some contacts that can give her names of good rescue organizations, too. Good luck to you and Sam!

Seems like time for a new thread, just because the old one was getting so lonnggggg.
His vet thinks he is doing very well. He got an X-ray, and the granuloma may have shrunk further, and certainly is no larger than it was a month ago. He seemed a bit tired yesterday, but we're chalking it up to his early rising for now.
Blood was drawn for liver and kidney function tests, and a white blood cell count, which was elevated last time. I hope to get those results very soon. His next appointment is not for another six weeks this time.
He has a new behavior. He's still very cuddly when he wants to be, but when he's in or on his day cage and I approach, the little booger quickly gets down to the cage floor and paces and loudly chastises me. Hormonal, I think.

Juicyquaker, if this type of biting is fairly new, what you're seeing might also be hormonal behavior. At two, she's probably heading into breeding season for the first time as a sexually mature quaker, assuming you're in the northern hemisphere. The days have started to get longer, which is the primary signal to them. If she's not already getting 10 to 12 hours of darkness every night, now is the time to start that. Also avoid or limit soft foods, and for sure don't give them to her by hand. Watch the physical affection. Keep it short and don't go beyond the head and neck. For more information on biting, see: www.stfrancisanimalandbird.com/index.php/pet-resources/library/9-avian-care/84-my-parrot-bites-what-can-i-do

She is very pretty! Her colors really come through in this. All that strutting and posturing; they're the chihuahuas of the bird world!

Happy gotcha day to all! Not to further hijack the thread, but I let Jan 3 pass without noting that it was the collective gotcha day here. The whole point was to make it easy to remember....

She is a beauty. Cookie's a good name. If she does turn out to be female, I also like Pearl. Short, not likely to be confused with a common word, and a precious thing.

To me, it's still the "new" year until I get used to writing 2016. That should happen by October.

It's fair to say that I don't feel any guilt at the individual bird level. I know my birds are in a better situation than they were previously. But, as a human, I don't think we do them any favors as a species by domesticating them.

I would just make sure that you can get vet care in the new area. I've never heard of anyone being ratted out by a vet, but anything is possible.

I was wondering about the temperature question. I did order some, actually more than I had planned. Diabolically clever to make shipping free at a certain price level. I got two for each, and will put them in all their cages. I think I'll keep them at the same level as another perch, so they won't have to choose between a higher spot and warm feet.

I mis-wrote. It's tomorrow I'm taking him, not next week.
