I gave Pidge some fresh pumpkin seeds which he ate voraciously and I had to take some off him. Next day he wasn't as interested in his food and this has gone on for 3 days. I'm giving him apple and fresh corn which are favourites but he seems only interested if they are outside the cage. He is not eating his pellets which should be his favourite food. He seems active and healthy so am not sure if it is a problem or whether he is trying to manipulate me.

A big change in eating habits could be a sign of illness. A vet visit would be a good idea.

Hopefully he isn't sick and just holding out for more goodies. Casey loves pumpkin seeds but only gets one each morning. She also gets more veggies than fruit to avoid getting too much sugar.
but like Gary said if he isnt eating at all, you might want to check with a vet

I agree with the others - get him checked out. When I took Bonnie to the vet he said she was only allowed to have one pumpkin seed per day (they are too fatty to give lots). Hope Pidge improves.

I agree, don't let the not eating go on for very long. It's a bad sign in and of itself, and you don't want to wait til he's acting ill.
On the pumpkin seeds, I'm not sure what the concern is. As far as seeds go, they don't seem to be bad. The ones I give Allie are 10% fat, and I've never heard of any specific concerns about them. Can someone enlighten me?

I just started giving them to Casey years ago when I learned they were low in fat. Then later I read they were so healthy for people with good minerals like magnesium and zinc. I wondered if they ate too many if the zinc would be too much for them. Might be over thinking it, but that was my reasoning.

Pidge might be trying to manipulate you as these little guys are quite smart in getting what they want. It is good that he is eating vegetables so keep that up. When Oscar first got onto his new pellets... I made it sound exciting to eat them.. and I would call them his peanuts. Now every day he comes down to the coffee table for pellets (his peanuts). I would eat a few and get all excited and say yummy yummy. Eventually he tried them and now he loves them. Of course he loves other food as well but I believe that he thinks this is a treat.
I absolutely would have Pidge checked up by a vet as well. Quakers may not show illnesses until it is too far gone so always best to be safe than sorry. Good Luck.

This got me wondering. I checked the ingredients of both pellets I give Allie, Harrison's and Higgins InTune, and they both have forms of zinc in them. I don't know if it is added or if it's a by-product of other ingredients. Calls for a little more digging, methinks.

Could go either way... definitely don't let it go on too long without a checkup. It definitely could be manipulation, but if the overall amount of food that Pidge is eating has decreased substantially, that it something you should definitely be wary of.

Thanks for your replies. He is back eating his normal food. Pumpkin seeds were on my list of very good for him. I think he was being manipulative. It didn't work and I'll limit them to treats. He is a real scavenger. Goodness knows what he is finding on the floor and on top of things. He loves his freshly sprouted seeds and beans.

Glad to hear things are back to normal! Cupcake loves her lentil sprouts. They are a highly beneficial part of a parrot diet, so definitely a good thing!
