10 gallons is theoretically too big for a betta, but "experts" put them in those stupid tiny cups to sell them, so I don't pay experts any mind. Bigger is better for tanks, just like it is for cages. My bettas have plants and floating logs to hang out in to rest (because bettas have to go to the top to take a breath periodically; they breathe air and water both). I do think a 20 gallon might be a bit much for a betta, but 10 is just right, if you ask me. Freckles has a five-gallon, at least as long as Mary continues to thrive, but he seems content with that. Fish tanks are a ton of work, I agree. It's not like you can just set it up, dump in some fish and call it good. You have to worry about temperature and water quality and tank mates (or not) and algae and all kinds of stuff. It never ends.

It's interesting that they breathe both air and water, those bettas. I wonder if that is a common characteristic in many other types of fish. It certainly never ends with fish tanks. It is fun, but at this point in time I find it more exhausting than fun. That could change again

My molly went to the surface for breaths fairly regularly, but right after that is when I realized she was unwell, and it may have been because of that. I gave in and bought more guppies yesterday, because Mary has continued to be very lively, but was also lonesome. I watched her swim back and forth and peer behind plants as if she were looking for her roommates who died. I got two females and a male to keep the ratio as recommended and they've all been chasing each other merrily around the tank. I think she's happier now.

I've read that if a fish that does not typically go to the surface for air is gasping for air, it means they are ill. Never witnessed it before though. Glad to hear you're restored balance to the tank!

Have you named the new guppies yet? Maybe Georgette and Sue Ann, since you've already used Rhoda and Phyllis.

That's a good idea. And the boy can be Ted.
