Oscar is such a scary cat.... geeezzz. He freaks out when anything gets changed ... it is unbelievable.
The other day I bought him another perch. I put it in his cage in the kitchen below his door perch thinking that he might like to go up and down the perches. Well... I got really busy and did not have the time to introduce him to it and I had to leave the house.
Later that morning my hubby tells me how (for some reason) Oscar flew around the kitchen and landed himself in the living room. I asked what scared him and he did not know.
Low and behold when I come home I have Oscar on my shoulder and walk into the kitchen to put him on his normal perch and NO WAY he was going there. Of course then it dawns on me... the new perch is there.
OK...I remove the perch and put it away.... Now.. that was 3 days ago and Oscar still is very hesitant to go and sit on his normal perch... Three flipping days and he is still scared. They sure have a longgggg memory.

Haha... these silly birds! Little prey animals tend to remember scary things for a loooong time

That's a pretty typical "parrot thing," and seems especially true of QPs. Ralph will sometimes start in with a Quaker alarm call for no apparent reason, and sometimes, I never can figure out what upset him. He always gets over it quickly. Then there are things that I recognize as harmless that Ralph doesn't-- like video of people running shown on TV, or anything colored orange. Those things almost always get the alarm call too. Ralph isn't usually put off by new perches or toys, but I always think that he might be with the next new thing I show up with.

Peppy is much braver about new things than my grey, Allie. I haven't really found anything that seems to be inherently spooky to him. But a couple days ago, I was changing food and water first thing in the morning, and he was busy grooming himself. I always talk to him as I approach, but I guess he was paying no attention. When I reached in to place his water bowl, it startled him so badly that he fell off his perch. The sound of him dropping scared Allie so much that she fell off her perch. Little dominoes.

Sorry Easttex but I laughed out loud at your post. That was hysterical. How is the boy going?

I felt very bad about it, but no one was hurt and it was funny. I think he's doing well, but I also think there are still issues. His next checkup is Monday, and I hope to be able to drop some of the meds. His weight has been a pretty steady 140g lately, and he's still not overweight. The Houston vet did comment that he is one of the larger Quakers she's seen.

Fingers and toes are crossed that there is a good outcome on Monday. Please let us know how he goes.

Really hoping things go well on Monday. That story above was quite amusing. 140g is quite large!
