Okay, so I'm a sucker. LOL I went to the Everson auction on Monday, and there were two ponies. One was a very sad, thin, did I mention OLD, POA mare, who was breaking my heart. She reminded me SO much of Cami. She went through the auction and nobody wanted her, not even the kill buyers. Since she was already skinny, I was terrified that she would go back to wherever she came from to die of starvation. So, I bought her for $10 with the plan to give her a humane euthanasia. That changed after the auction, when I could spend some quality time with her. This pony may be 30, but she is not ready to go. She has some life left in her, and is VERY sweet. My plan now is to get her feet and teeth taken care of, start to put some weight on her (she could use about 125lbs or so) and find her a retirement home. She's not in quarantine, because I found out that she had been kept with other horses, and none of them were sick. She looked healthy at the auction, and the other pony at the auction was in great shape. So the risk was minimal. I have her boarded with Cami, and she really is Cami's mini-me. I can't afford two horses, so I do have a gofundme campaign set up, if anyone wants to help. Once again, an amazing angel from the forum has stepped up in a big way. www.gofundme.com/tp487672

Why is her name Sweet Pea, you ask? Well, because Cami's name is Camelia (Camelias are my favorite flower), and this pony reminds me of Cami in so many ways, so I wanted to name her after another flower. And, they both have spots! It works!

Poor little thing. Is she eating okay? I have never heard of a POA before. What's their history? I am looking forward to seeing the "after" pictures once she puts some weight on. There is a pony in the paddock with Izzie, her name is Maggie and she is 30 years old. She suffers from founder but is the sweetest little thing and still has a lot of life left in her. Izzie gets a bit cranky if I spend any time with Maggie. Like you, I would love to adopt her but just cant afford 2 ponies.

She nibbles her grass hay and eats her mush. POAs are "Pony of the Americas". They are basically Appaloosa ponies. The foundation stallion of the POA breed was out of an Appaloosa/Arabian cross mare and a Shetland stallion. He was born in 1956, in Iowa; born white with black "paint smear" type markings on his body. The smears on his flank resembled a handprint, therefore, his name was Black Hand. "The standards Les and his friends set up were a real challenge to any breeder. To be registered as a POA, strict guidelines were followed. The pony had to be between the height limits of 44 inches to 52 inches. The head was to be small and dished as the Arab; the body was to be muscled as the Quarter Horse; and the coloring had to be Appaloosa, visible at 40 feet. This was to be a breed for children to ride and show. Adults could only show the animals at halter or with a cart. So these equines must also be gentle and easy to train."

LOL I think Sweet Pea is a bit hard of hearing....yesterday my friend's boyfriend got to the farm and saw her laying on top of her hay. He called to her and she didn't move, so he walked over to her, calling to her with every step. She never moved, so he was sure she had died. He reached down to touch her flank and nearly gave him a heart attack (and she must have felt the same way) because she JUMPED to her feet when he touched her. She was SOUND asleep! She's also a grumpy old lady at times. I was loving on her, and decided to see if maybe she might be broke to ride. I put a hand on her withers and one on her back and jumped up, putting my weight on her. She slapped her ears back, turned her bum to me, and gave a halfhearted kick. LOL Not that I blame her, as old and skinny as she is, she probably doesn't feel all that great. I was pretty amused by that.

She might not know her name. Having said that, she is not a young animal and may sleep more deeply. How's she going? Spent time with my girl today. I love her so much - I hate leaving her. She was so well behaved and did everything that was asked of her - which is a miracle in itself. We also have quiet time together where I stand beside her and place my hand on her back, drop my energy and clear my mind. It is lovely that she stands quietly beside me for as long as she wants. The 30 year old pony is looking a bit thin so will look into getting some pony pellets for her, Izzie and Possum.

I wasn't able to see her yesterday, but I'm going in a couple of hours.
She isn't drinking, but she is getting water from her soaked feed and the grass. I may just go with the original plan and put her down. At least she won't have starved to death in a field somewhere.

Why do you want to put her down? Has the dentist checked her teeth? Are you having problems getting a new home for her?

Poor baby. She does look like she's had a rough go of it. If I had a spare dime, I'd help, but if you still need help when I get my next paycheck, I'd be happy to add to the fund.

Okay, so she had her teeth floated, and they were bad. She'll need them done again in 4-6 months. Her mouth was bleeding from the sharp points on the left side, those were taken care of. She has two back teeth that are taller than the others, and they will need to be filed again. Dr. Kelley didn't want to do too much at once. Her heart sounds good, but she was wiggly so they couldn't get a good listen to her lungs. When she stood still for a second, they thought they heard some rattling in her lungs. She had her Tetanus shot, but that was all. Her eyes are infected, but no ulcers. I have some ointment to use for a week, 2-3 times daily. She should be okay on the trip down to Oregon, Dr. Kelley suggested a couple stops to check on her in between.

Why is she going to Oregon? Her teeth sound terrible - no wonder the poor girl couldn't eat. It will make a big difference once she can start to eat again. Thanks for organising everything Dani

Hi Dani, how's Sweet Pea? Can she eat a little better now her teeth have been done? I know she goes to her new forever home on Sunday. Please give her a kiss for me and tell her that she is a special little pony who touched the hearts of many people. You are pretty special too Dani
