Hi. We are new owners of a Quaker. Well, relatively new owners, he will be a year old on Sept 17/2015. Ever since we got him he has chewed on things all day long, anything he can get a hold of, tv remotes, clothes, paper of anykind. He has lots of toys that he chews on as well, absolutely destroying some of them...lol We thought he would grow out of this behaviour, but so far he shows no sign of stopping. Our question is: Are ALL Quakers chewers like this? Thanks, Lonnie and Lilly

Welcome to the forum... I do believe most Quakers love to chew but some perhaps not as much as others. I am wondering if he allows you to play with him? Games like tickle tickle... or catch his bill... allowing him to play back with you? Does he fly? I would definitely put things out of his site that you would not want to have destroyed as their bills are very strong.

Hi Julianna, thanks for that. He's clipped so he can fly a bit. We have him clipped so we can take him outside at the cottage without him flying off and getting lost. He does allow us to play tickle tickle and pet him, even grab his beak though he gets an occasional bite in when we are doing that...lol He was very nippy with us for the first 6 or 7 months but has settled down a bit since then. He's very much a people person and spends a lot of time on either one of our shoulders. Thanks again! Lonnie and Lilly

Oh and he takes the buttons/keys off my laptop in no time! That's a favorite pastime of lots of parrots. I've often thought that discarded computer keyboards could be repurposed and marketed as parrot toys. Most parrots like to chew things to some extent, but some are really enthusiastic about it, like your QP. My QP Ralph is more of a moderate chewer. I give him popsicle sticks to chew and he'll go through one or two a day on average. He also has his thin wooden dowels for his construction projects, and sometimes will chew those up too. Since your QP is such an avid chewer, provide a good supply of safe, chewable toys. That won't guarantee that he'll give up disassembling your laptop, but it should keep him busy and happy.

Welcome Lonnie, Lilly and Quaker. Haha, TV remotes and laptops are in a league of their own when it comes to being candidates for chewing!...some time ago I started a thread called 'Bonnie and the Laptop' (it may still be there). As Gary said, some quakers like his QP, Ralph, are more moderate - but ours is NOT. Funnily enough, toys simply can't compete with the joy of dismantling needed (and precious/valuable) household items. Have fun on this Forum. Everyone's really nice!

Thanks so much, cnyguy and bitebird! I hadn't thought of popsicle sticks, he does like to chew wood, so that's probably a great idea! We actually gave Squineech(our QP) an old broken tv remote to have to himself, but of course he like the working ones better...lol Thanks again for all the great replies, you guys are GREAT!! Cupcake doesn't really care for chewing on most things that she's supposed to chew on, like her toys... but she will chew on remotes and laptop keyboards all day if we let her get to them. This is definitely normal behavior

Oscar is now at the stage that he will pretend to chew the remote only because he is smart... and knows that I will jump up and give him attention. No matter how hard I try... and I am not a dumb person.... he finds a way to get what he wants.... even though he does not say it in English... lol

Bonnie has become more cunning since she's an adult bird. For many weeks she'll appear disinterested, but inevitably returns to chomping remotes, laptop keys and phone charger cables (just last week I bought some iPhone charging cables on Ebay that have braid over them - just so if she chews them the cable will still be safe to use).
