Today I was working on the gardens at my apartment complex. When I pulled out a large weed, I disrupted a nest of ground bees. They were not pleased. I got stung twice-- once on my left elbow, and also on my left leg. I also had one of the bees land on the lens of my sunglasses. I tossed the glasses aside, and retrieved them later, bee-free. I get a mild allergic reaction to bee stings-- lots of pain, redness and swelling around the sting. I've probably tried most of the recommended remedies, but if anyone has any suggestions, I might be willing to give them a try. The double-dose of antihistimines that a doctor prescribed in the past seems less effective than it used to be, and makes me feel groggy besides.

Ouch. I always use calamine lotion if I get bitten by any creepy crawlies but don't know if it would work on an allergic reaction. Good luck and hope the pain stops soon.

Ow! I'm sorry you got stung. I'm terrified of bees. I'm not deathly allergic, but the one time I did get stung I apparently put my foot closer to the bee than he appreciated.
My whole foot swelled up for several days.

The last time I was stung was when I was a kid (about 10 - I felt sorry for a bee on the footpath and decided to pick it up). My neck, face and head swelled up and my mum had to put me in a cold shower for awhile to keep me awake. I'm also allergic to Penicillin, the normal treatment for bee-stings...the best I can suggest is Phenergan. I have actually been wondering about other solutions/treatments myself (apart from carrying an EpiPen).

I have not been stung too many times, fortunately, but have a couple of home remedies in mind for the next time. If you've already tried them, Gary, perhaps you can tell me if they helped at all. Ice would be my first to try. Honey, second. That one is a little ironic if it does work.

Things are slightly better tonight. Last night, it looked like I'd taken a small ripe tomato, sliced it in half, and stuck one half on my elbow and the other on my leg. The swelling has gone down and the area surrounding the stings has faded to an unpleasant salmon pink. I'm waiting for fresh ice cubes now (the new ones I'm making are only about half frozen so far). I'll have to try some "ironic" honey; I have none on hand so will put that on my shopping list for tomorrow. Right now, I'm trying a recipe I found online, a mixture of vinegar, baking soda and meat tenderizer. I smell like a Caesar salad. I think I'm getting some slight relief from it, but not much.

I wonder what Ralph is thinking of all this...hope you are feeling better soon. It sounds VERY uncomfortable.

When we were kids, we never had any drugs from the Doctor (could not afford it) so my Mom would always put a butter knife in the freezer and after it got cold enough, we would apply it to the sting. It did help the swelling. Sometimes the old remedies are the best.

Sometimes the old remedies are the best. Very true. I had to shoo Ralph away from the sting on my elbow because he wanted to preen the area for me. Right now, that's not such a good idea. Ralph means well, but hasn't quite mastered the concept of "gentle" when preening me-- he gets a little too enthusiastic sometimes. If he hit the bee sting in the wrong way, I'd go straight through the roof.

At least Ralph isn't attacking it because he doesn't like the color.

At least Ralph isn't attacking it because he doesn't like the color. Fortunately for both Ralph and me, the sting sites didn't turn orange. Ralph doesn't usually object to red or pink, but he does recognize that my elbow isn't supposed to be either of those colors.

Allie and Peppy are fine with orange, but Jake and Elwood, the mice, don't seem to care for it. I give them some Zupreem fruit blend every day, and every day the orange pellets have been spurned. Who knew mice were picky?

Oscar would be terrified of the oranges and bright yellows or reds however, remember me saying that they were rebuilding our road and Oscar saw the people and signs everywhere in these colors. They started the work in June and are still at it so... Oscar has gotten used to it now. I can even take him outside where the bright colors are and he doesn't try to hide or scream.
I am sure once the workers leave this area and remove their stuff, Oscar will go back to his little terrified self... lol

Jake and Elwood, the mice, don't seem to care for it. The Blues Brothers is one of our all-time favourite movies (I assume your mice are named from those characters?). Of course, having been a pro trumpeter in a previous life I love listening & watching top-notch musos. Have you seen Blues Bros 2000? Check out the last jam session scene with all the big name musicians - go Jon Faddis (screaming trumpet) and others like Eric Clapton, Bo Diddley etc.! Sorry to digress AGAIN.

I find it hard to stay on topic, too! Yes, they are named for the Blues Brothers. We haven't really assigned the names, but I imagine it doesn't matter too much. I have not seen that movie, but will watch for it. I probably will not recognize all the musicians that you would. Tin ear and all that.
