OK, so, I own many tarantulas in addition to my snake, dog, and Pingo. Today, my favorite spider, Spud, a Trinidad Chevron, died! It was a sad day. He (could have been she) got stuck in his skin and died, during a molt, while I was at work. Well he could have been there for a couple of days-- I didn't check on him and now he's dead! I knew he was getting ready to molt; he was really dark and hadn't been eating. I had decided to let him be. I guess I should have checked on him.
Anyway, because of Spud's demise, I checked on Fluffy, my Orange Baboon Tarantula (OBT). I hadn't seen her for several weeks and she hadn't been eating her crickets. So, I got worried. I thought she was just getting ready to molt, since she was darker than usual. I wasn't too concerned... BUT, because of Spud's death, I got worried and I decided the only way to make sure Fluffy was alive was to open up her lair and see. Well, SHE ALMOST ESCAPED AND ALMOST BIT ME! She lives! I'm glad she is alive. I feel kinda bad for destroying her lair to check on her. I would have deserved the bite.
(For those who don't know, OBTs have medically significant venom. It would have been bad-- not deadly, just bad.)
My 5 year old niece and I had a burial for Spud. She helps me feed some of the other docile tarantulas. She told me that at her mom's house, her cat got bitten by a snake and died; and, she said they just threw him in the creek behind her Mom's house in a trash bag. (My brother, her father, and her mother are not together anymore. For good reason.) That made me think how inconsiderate that was to do. I've buried all of my animals--even a mouse that I killed for Chickichumba, my python, that she didn't eat. I felt horrible that I killed it. I have never killed another mouse. It was very sad.
I also buried Blacky Goodness, a big Black Moor. Blacky goodness lived in my dad's pond and a frog ate her eyes out!! It was so sad. We euthanize her. Fungus was growing in her eye socket. Blacky Goodness used to eat out of everyone's hand. She'd come right up to you to eat. It was my dad's favorite fish.
Nonetheless, I could never see myself putting Pingo in a trash bag and throwing him into a creek. Does anyone else feel this way? Do you guys bury your animals, too; or, am I just overly sentimental about them dying?
I will confess, I have thrown away many of dead fish and some spiderlings that didn't make it. But never anything I was attached to that had feelings, like a cat. I don't even like cats; but, I don't think I would have just thrown him away.
