Awww, Cami looks so much better!
And Jan, i had a Shetland when I was a kid. I was too young and inexperienced and he was STUBBORN. LOL But most animals will learn to trust you when they have tested you and figured you out. Just keep trying with Izzie.

Wow Dani, I just cant get over the difference from when you first got her to now. She looks absolutely amazing. Give her a kiss from me. And Siobhan, I am taking next week off work to spend each day with Izzie in the hope of breaking through the trust problem she has.

She's off all of her extra feed (alfalfa pellets, beet pulp, senior grain and canola oil), she's just on local hay and a little bit of pasture.
She weighed 902lbs the last time I weighed her. Now we're working on building the muscle tone that her body used when she was starving. She's coming along just great! Yay!

Spent yesterday with Izzie and what a wonderful day we had. She was easy to catch and we did some groundwork together (without supervision). She walked perfectly beside me instead of just rushing ahead. And we had some lovely quiet time together. She also allowed other people to groom her but only in those areas where she likes - so not the back legs, tail and ears. I managed to get her coat off and put a fresh one on with very little mucking around. She did really well but I dont think she likes children very much. She is such a special girl and I am looking forward to spending the rest of the week with her. She is almost at break through point smile.png

What a magical day I had today. Izzie came to greet me when I arrived and had no problems putting the halter on her. We did lots of ground work and walking over poles and in between the work, we spent quiet time together. Then we had lunch together - not wise to be eating something different to a horse - they are very pushy wanting to eat your food. Then we went for a walk together. She is a truly amazing little girl. I fell in love with her today. She is breaking through the trust barrier and can hardly wait to see her tomorrow.

OMG OMG OMG!!!!!! I can hardly contain myself right now, I'm SO excited and happy for you and for Izzie!! YES!!!!!!! Coming to greet you is HUGE!!!!!! Whatever you've been doing while catching her is working BEAUTIFULLY!!!! This is exactly what is supposed to happen!
Oh, I'm definitely feeling your excitement, Jan! LOL I can't wait for today's update!!!!
Update on Cami is that her neck isn't quite as thick, so she got to enjoy some pasture time last night, without her grazing muzzle.

Good news about Cami. She is such a special girl.
Had another magical day with Izzie. Did lots of groundwork and had lots of quiet time. We had lunch together - again, not an easy thing. I got her coat on with very little trouble which was great. Did a little bit of touching with the grooming brushes on her back legs. She is such a beautiful girl and it is just wonderful when she comes to greet me and I can put her halter on with no problem at all.

Isn't there something so special about just sitting in your horse's stall or pasture, relaxing?

Today is the first day that I didn't want to leave her. We did the usual groundwork, had a walk around the laneways and had lunch together. As I was loading up the car, I remembered something I had left in the tack room and went to get it - she walked to her gate waiting for me. She kept doing it every time she saw me. It was just so hard to leave her. I was not going to see her tomorrow as I have got a lot of things to do but I might just squeeze in a visit for a couple of hours.

Wow, she's really warmed up to you! That's awesome!!! Once she starts coming around a bit more, you should see about getting a used pony harness and cart. She's too little for riding, obviously, but driving is a LOT of fun!

Hi Dani, we discussed this weeks ago but feel her legs aren't strong enough nor that she has the right attitude to haul a cart. Had a wonderful day with her today - we did lots of groundwork and had lunch together (well, she has lunch, I just have a drink). I bought a little CD player and took it along - popped in Medicine Woman and it had a profound effect on Izzie. She stood there for 20 mins with her head lowered and eyes half shut. She was really at peace. I have to go back to work tomorrow - I will miss spending time with her each day. How's Cami?

Things didnt go so well with Izzie on the weekend. She was great in some respects and seems to have gone back to square 1 in other respects. So I have to decide if it is worth keeping her. I really think she would be better off with someone who can spend a little time with her each day as opposed to the one day a week I spend with her. I wont be making a quick decision and will be talking to lots of people before I decide but I really have to think of what is best for her (and not me). Even if I can encourage the caretaker to spend a few minutes with her each day, I think that would help but she has so many other horses to look after that I dont really like to ask her. Any ideas would be appreciated as I am feeling quite glum about having to make such a decision sad.png

Hmm....making these decisions is SO hard. I've been there.
Take your time thinking about it, and you're right - you really do have to think about what's best for the horse. You can have your mentor and other connections keep their ears open for an experienced and calm older child (teenager) or adult who might want to spend time with a pony. It's something to consider, anyway.
I hope this helps. Cami is doing wonderful!

Thanks Dani. If I can get her into a paddock with other ponies/horses, do you think that might make a difference? Currently she is in a paddock on her own and when I take her for "walks" she does like to say hello to some of the other ponies/horses. I really dont want to give her to anyone but if someone comes along who can offer her a better deal, then I will allow her to go.

What is the issue, exactly? I ask this so I can give you a good answer.
If the issue is that she needs more interaction and training with humans, then another horse or pony companion wouldn't really help. If you're worried about her getting lonely, then a companion could really help a lot.

Hi Dani, have been giving it lots of thought and chatting to a couple of people. My horse mentor is on holidays at the moment but I will see her this weekend so can discuss it with her and the caretaker of the horses/ponies. I am worried because I can only be with her one day a week and she is in a paddock by herself. I get the feeling that she would like some companions - which can be organised. However, to help with her interaction with humans, I feel she needs someone to spend a little time with her each day to help her through. She is good now - I can walk up to her and put the halter on - there is no more running away. I guess I need to figure out what she wants and what I want. Is it okay to spend just one day a week with her? I have lots of holidays due so can split them over the year and spend time with her then. I just want to do what is right for her. Her chances of being rehomed are not very good - she cant be ridden at all so she would have to be a companion animal. We are testing her with males this weekend as she seems to react badly to them and she doesnt appear to like children either.

Yes, she can be worked with one day a week and be fine. That's as long as someone is there to check her food and water daily.

She is fed and watered daily as she is still living with the rescue/permanent horses/ponies so feeding and watering are not an issue. I have been thinking long and hard today and I just cant stand the thought of her going to anyone else. I love her so much that it would break my heart if she went elsewhere.

I know exactly how you feel, Jan. I'm glad she'll be staying with you.
When I rescued my first pony, Gypsy, she was very young and green (didn't have much training) and was a handful. She would decide she really didn't want to do something and rear sometimes. She was just too much horse for me to handle, but I was terrified to rehome her because of her issues. I would have been heartbroken if I saw her at another auction, and would have bought her back. Anyway...I was seriously considering putting her down because I was afraid to rehome her...until a good friend suggested that I contact a trainer we know. So I did, and she had a spot open and was willing to take Gypsy as a rehoming project. Gypsy is doing absolutely wonderful now, and I couldn't be happier with how things have worked out.
I say keep Izzie with you unless you find the perfect situation for her. Is her paddock next to another horse? If so, she'll be just fine.

Hi Dani, thankyou so much for your thoughts and advice. It has been a hard week for me trying to decide what is the right thing to do for Izzie. She is right next door to Richie and Markeen - Richie likes her so will speak to Richie's owner and the caretaker and see if she can go into their paddock. She is only in a small paddock by herself because she was so difficult to catch but that is no longer a problem (plus she can be bribed with food if I cant catch her in the new paddock). I have been thinking about the progress we have made over the weeks and she has come a long way - I tend to concentrate on the things that arent going well instead of all she has accomplished which has been amazing. Thanks again Dani, you have really helped me make the right decision. Hugs to you.
