Casey will be happy when she sees the new toys I am going to make up or her, I found all her favourites at the store today. She wasn't so happy when I emptied the bag and brought her over to see the pieces, she let out a squawk that it all looked scary and flew back to her cage. I will wait until the morning to put new ones in her cage.

I make all of Mr P's toys now and I will make toys for my foster when I get her too. What I make is custom designed to Mr P's tastes so I know he is going to like whatever I make him. Very gratifying!

Yup that is like Casey she is picky, needs everything to be leather and wood... sisal in her mind is evil! She watched patiently while I rearranged her cage today and popped in to inspect while I rearranged and added new stuff. It all passed inspection, we will see tonight which perch she chooses to sleep on.

For Mr P, it is all about bells, shiny plastic pieces and rope (he loves sisal!) Funny how they have such individual tastes

Jade is ALL about bells. If a toy doesn't make noise, she has no use for it. So when she's in a musical mood, it's very noisy in their room. She bangs all those bells around and squawks at the top of her little lungs and even holds some in her foot and yells into them. LOL Nobody else has such an obvious preference. My starling likes noisy toys, but she also likes stuff she can destroy. Freddie loves to destroy things but he likes the occasional bell. But by golly, Jade simply won't touch it if it isn't noisy.

That's exactly how Mr P is. Matter of fact, if a toy isnt supposed to be noisy, he will find a WAY to MAKE noise. He was taken with a little empty plastic container I had (it had food in it at one point) and he was interested in it, I put it on one of his playstands. He immediately went over to it, picked it up and started BANGING it on the bottom of the stand. He was in heaven when I put a couple of foot toys that someone had made for him, in the container. I swear, he stood there and banged that thing to hear the toys rattle for a good hour

I guess Casey likes the quiet ones, she just needs wood she can grab onto and chew to pieces.

Happy loves to chew, but she will only chew a hoop toy that I bought her. It's made of dried palm fronds woven into hoops. She destroys it within a month, and I just keep buying new ones because it's the only thing she gnaws on. Planet Pleasures is the manufacturer. I've tried getting other toys intended for chewing (wood blocks, etc) but she won't look twice at them.
She also LOVES prescription pill bottles (which we discovered by accident as my husband had one on his desk once when she came out.) In order to indulge her without having to worry about poisoning, I cleaned one out with diluted bleach & rinsed well, then let it dry out overnight. I put some dried corn kernels in it for noise. She flings it around and goes insane, rolling it, picking it up by the edges and shaking it, throwing it, etc. I don't have the first clue why she loves this, I just go with it.

The pill bottle is a really good idea. I wonder if Mr P would like that?
He only chews on that pretty colored crinkled paper. I bought a big bag of it and tie pieces of the paper onto his toys and the sides of his ladder. Every time he chews it all off, I just replace it from the bag I bought (from a birdsafe toy store) Keeps him using the same toys over and over!
He will not chew on wood or any of those toys that have the little treats inside the toy. I guess I am fortunate, he is really not destructive, just likes to make a lot of noise. Take your pick! LOL
I am so curious as to how my little foster will be. Although I've rescued many birds over the years, I really don't have much experience with Quakers. They seem to be a breed unto themselves, not really exhibiting the same type of behavior as say..an Amazon or a tiel

Peppy doesn't seem to have much appreciation for toys, except for his plastic chain links. I suspect he didn't have many for his first 21 years. I tried putting a new toy in his cage today, after letting him see it in the vicinity for a couple days, but he chastised me up one side and down the other for so long that I finally took it out. I put a sleep buddy in his cage and sometimes when I'm baby-talking to him he will start chewing on that, but otherwise he doesn't chew on anything.

I have to show Mr P any new toys I put in his cage, first, while he is out on his playstand and get his approval before I will put them in his cage. I will ding the bell or rattle whatever there is to rattle and let him see how much fun Im having with it. After that, he normally wants to try the toy out himself. THEN I put it in his cage. Since he doesnt spend a lot of time in his cage, he really doesn't get bored with the toys. I rotate them out more to keep his cage aggression under control than because he gets bored.

We're still working on getting Peppy to want any outside of cage time. Since he got his foot stuck in the gap created with the door down a while back, I've only seen him venture onto his porch twice, and only briefly. Otherwise, I would love to use your method, Sharyn. I don't want to force things on him, but do want him to know of the possibilities.

Wow those are going to make some nice toys! I have a question - is rubber safe? I ask because I have a "Lifeproof" case for my phone, which apparently isn't Chester proof He LOVES it, and if I have my phone in my hand, there he is climbing down to take a bite of it. It now has a few chunks missing. He also does this to my pedometer wrist band. If it's safe, I was thinking of getting him one of those little holey rubber balls that are for dogs. He'd probably love it.

I don't feel rubber is safe. I've seen lots of rubbery looking balls and similar for birds, but they can easily take a chunk out and swallow it (accidentally or on purpose,) leading to digestive issues and surgeries. The owner of the pet store I worked at would not sell "kong" type toys for that reason.

Good to know - thank you! I'll just have to make sure he stays away from my phone. He sure loves to climb down & take a bite of it lol.
