So this morning I was having a nice little conversation with Darwin (which consisted of me talking to him and him chattering away in Quaker speak replies, you know, like how they practice human speech before bed time), and out of his mouth comes a garbled, but recognizable "good boy!" I was blown away. I thought they didn't start talking until around six months, at least?! No way was I hearing things, because he tried to say it again, though not as successfully. Maybe he was rewarding me for changing his name from something silly to something more befitting his intelligence, lol. Sly bugger!

Hi! We 'got' Bonnie at 8 weeks old and she could say "good girl" and "hello" within 2 weeks. So I'd say you are not imagining things! These critters are SO smart and they notice everything. Bonnie's now nearly 1.5 years and continues to attempt new words/phrases (although a lot of it is really squeaky or sounds like a robot, LOL).

Six months old is considered the average age for a QP to start imitating human speech-- but some may start while they're still being weaned, and some wait until they're much older. A few never speak anything but Quaker.

Our Cupcake is one of the ones that speaks only Quaker, at least for now... She'll be four in 10 days. It can really vary a lot! They are such intelligent little creatures.

Another name for a Quaker - Noam Chom"p"sky. Darwin is a great name. Once I get started on these naming things it just takes me a while to wind down.

Isn't it wonderful to hear them speak? I absolutely love it. It makes all the rest of the sqwaking worth while.

Yeah! He's already starting to practice his sounds and words before bed time, and he talks in his sleep, lol! It's so damn adorable, hehe. He has actually woken himself up a few times and looked at me and sqeaked in annoyance as if I had dared to wake his majesty.

Gordon is bilingual (English and Quaker). He does a lot of muttering under his breath, too. There is one word in Quaker that I cant figure out what it means - sounds like "squikpru". Would one of the elder birds here like to translate? ~Sandee~

I could use some translations as well -- Cupcake speaks only Quaker and has many sounds. It's hard trying to interpret Quaker sometimes!

I don't think Ralph has ever said "squikpru." Maybe the Quaker Parrot language has different dialects, like so many languages spoken by humans do, and Gordon and Ralph speak different Quaker dialects.

Mr P doesnt speak that much but he uses words in context almost every time he does say something. He is on a new kick, when I am not paying enough attention to him and he wants to be picked up, he goes to the end of the window sill where my work desk is and says Hey! If I ignore him, he says HEY! If I continue to ignore him (sometimes I must work to earn a paycheck to keep him in the manner he is accustomed to) it escalates to HEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY! This time, if I continue to ignore him, he says D A M N IT! HEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
By the time he starts cussing, I am laughing at him so hard that I quit ignoring him.
So because of my reaction, he does this now, quite often. I know I need to stop laughing at him, but he's just so funny.
