Peppy has something built up on some of his feathers right next to his beak. I've tried for a couple days to remove it, but washcloths soaked in warm water are not doing the job. I can't imagine what I've fed him that hardens to a concrete consistency. I know that Dawn dish soap is used on oiled birds, but I want to be especially careful because of the location. Any ideas of what I can use to soften this whatever-it-is?

I am presuming it is a problem for the Peppy... or is it something that you just want to remove? Sorry I cannot give you any product to use... but I was just curious. You are very fortunate to have a vet near by that could probably help. Please let me know what it is that did this... if you find out.
One thing I know is red peppers really stick and harden.... but I doubt that is what it is as you would be used to seeing this. Good Luck

Can you talk to the vet over the phone (which will save you a trip)?

I don't know if it bothers Peppy, but with his recent history of bacterial infection I don't want to take any chances with that clump of old food, or whatever it is. His vet is very good about phone calls, and I will call her tomorrow if I'm not able to remove it in the morning. I was hoping there was some wonderful product along the lines of Poop-Off that can be used on feathers, but if there is, I haven't found it.

I am wondering if a long bath might help?

Not so far, Aaron. I realized it looked better when I left it alone, so decided to just watch it over the weekend. When I checked it this morning it seemed to have gotten a little bigger. I'm going to give it one more shot with warm water and Dawn, then call the doc. Thanks for asking.

Hmmm... I wonder what it is! A little bit of concrete it sounds like

I called the vet yesterday, but she had a personal emergency and didn't call back. Just as well, though, because I finally made some progress on it this morning. I was afraid I would rip out a bunch of his feathers, but he lost only one. It's not entirely gone, but it's a lot better.

Any idea where it came from or what it was made of?

As near as I can figure, he might have gotten a drop of the antibiotic there, and things slowly built up. It was compounded with something to make it more palatable, and I didn't notice it being that sticky, but it probably was. Tough stuff, anyway.
I was out most of today and my husband just about came unglued. Peppy, who has problems with his grip, fell off his perch and stayed at the bottom of the cage. My husband said he looked unsteady. Scared him terribly. He seemed fine when I got home and he has been acting normal, so I'm just keeping a watch. This little guy might do both my husband and me in with worries.

Eek... glad it sounds like he is doing better. That would be quite scary.

Did that stuff come off from Peppy's feathers?

It took some elbow grease, but it did finally come clean. I think it might be starting again, on the same side. Curious. At least he's pretty patient with me working on it.
