I've been thinking about making this thread for a while, but I decided i needed to get on with it! First, I heard Pippin say "Pretty, pretty bird" yesterday, another new phrase, and I need to have some kind of record, or I'm going to forget! Second, if anyone happens to be interested, I managed to record Pippin talking; it's pretty bad quality, there's nothing much to look at and the radio is on (he sometimes goes on little rants when he's on his own, I was hiding behind the door  ), but he does say nearly everything he knows, apart from "I love you" (of course!) and "I'm an eagle". Phrases Pippin can say, in the order I remember them appearing; cock-a-doodle-doo (HUGE apologies if that sets off the filter!) peek-a-boo hello gimme kiss come here what are you doing? Pippin treat treat good boy good morning get down a minute I'm an eagle Pretty bird Pippin Talks |

I miss my talking Lucybird.
Willow is bashful although he’s started to rant in the mornings and scream when I eat or have an online meeting.
Have you thought of teaching peregrine to ask for things, like “ want drink” or “out”? That is really useful. And “thank you” is something that everyone enjoys

Senor Willow talks a bit in his cage but otherwise is as silent as a sphinx. How did you get Peregrine to repeat words? Did he just start doing it?

It's been a back and forward to be honest. First of all, I will say, I have made a huge effort to teach him to talk; when I first got him, I decided on a few words and phrases and just repeated them over and over and over, and I still do that when I'm talking to him. His breeder told me he was already making some speech-like sounds, so I've also taken note of any noises he makes, and tried to work out what he might be saying, then said that back to him, and then made sure to click (I'm using a clicker to help train) and treat ANYTHING that might be human speech, until it gets quite clear, then I reduce the reward to only the times he says it 'properly', as well as making sure I'm saying it very clearly to him. What's been fascinating is some phrases I was trying really hard to teach him right from the start (like, "I love you") have been really hard, but other things, like "Get down a minute" I was NOT trying to teach him at all, and he still picked them up! This week's new words are "yummy" and "tickle" and, quite scarily, he's worked out "gimme tickle" from "gimme kiss" and "tickle". I'm 99% certain I don't say "gimme tickle", I think he's worked it out on his own  |

As I've remarked before, parrots will learn to say what they want and not necessarily what we want them to. I tried for 40 years to get George the YCA to say good night at bedtime, but he never did. But "what a slob!" he picked up quickly and enjoyed repeating. I know I've also mentioned that one of the first things Ralph learned to say is "wait, wait, wait, wait, wait." I wasn't intending for him to learn that. When he would squawk for my attention when I was busy, that's what I would say to him and it's still one of his favorite things to say. Something else I sometimes said when Ralph was demanding my attention is "what, what?" Scooter the CAG learned that one and would say it when Ralph squawked, so I didn't have to say it anymore.  Of course, I never give up trying to teach the words and phrases I would like Ralph to learn. Someday he might surprise me, just as Pippin could surprise you, and probably will. |

I find the fact that our birds decide what they want to say a lovely quirk, and it shows what individuals they are!

Another new phrase today! Not 100% clear, but I was saying it to him at the time, so it was an easy one to recognise; "Gotta go shops" |

I don't know where it came from or who first said it, but there's an old saying that goes "never say anything in front of your parrot that you wouldn't want your minister to hear." It may be a joke, but those of us who live with parrots know that it's not really so silly. |

Absolutely. This is partly why I keep birds out of the bathroom.
Reminds me of when I was newly married and showing my apartment to a guest at a housewarming party. We walked back to the bedroom and Lucy Quaker began yelling about “gimmee kiss, (smack smack smack), kiss kiss kiss!, good kiss!” The guest laughed her head off and I was duly embarrassed. Thanks, Lucy.
