Thank you everyone for your support. Chewie and I are off to a good start. She even talks. When I got home from work today, as I was opening the door to my place, I hear, "Hi sweet pea". I guess she likes me. LOL. She makes me a little nervous because she really wants to be out of her cage as much as possible. I guess the previous owner before she was placed in the shelter had her out of the cage all day. Unfortunately, I work full time and I can't do that, but I can let her out when I get home. She's still getting used to the layout of my place and last night when she was flying around she had no clue where she was going so I quickly put her back in her cage. I just don't want to risk any injury. Looks like we need to do some flight training and I should probably get a T stand.
I was trying to live stream the Bird channel on you tube today so she can watch and listen to birds as I was at work but the channel turned itself off after a few hours. Does anyone keep the radio or TV on for your bird? If so, what do they watch or listen to?

I just put the TV on for Bonnie some days. Most of it is crap but so I just choose whatever the least crap one is….LOL Channel 10 (Australia) has Judge Judy & The Bold & The Beautiful, which she doesn’t really object to. 🤣

Chewie seems to feel at home already. If you can, you should take her on a tour of your home so she'll get a better feel for the layout. No doubt she will adjust to your schedule and get used to not being out of her cage all day. I do leave either the radio or television on for Ralph when I go out. When I had satellite radio (Sirius/XM) I would leave the Siriusly Sinatra channel on. Ralph likes jazz and standards. Now I leave the local classical music radio station on. If I leave the television on for Ralph it's usually tuned to one of the classic TV channels. He doesn't pay that much attention to most of what's on TV but I think he appreciates the sound more than the pictures.

I have played R2D2 noises for my Meyers and he really liked that. Quaker thought it was scary but he’s a bit timid. I have found that parrots like music or natural sounds. I also play Quakers talking for my Quaker (to convince him that TALKING IS COOL).
Jasper (Meyers) says about five phrases. He has a robot voice.

Hello! Yes, I was just thinking about this thread today. Thanks for the reminder. So, Chewie is a very active bird and she LOVES to be out her cage and loves to fly. So, today, I had her out of her cage and she was having a great time flying around when suddenly she bumped into my balcony window and landed on the floor. At first she appeared startled and she was quiet for a while, but seemed fine overall. I put her back in her cage right away and not long after she was back to eating and preening herself and then tonight she wanted time out of the cage again. So, tonight, I just had her on my lap while I sat on the couch while watching TV. She just loves that. She even took a nap and slept with her head tucked in her back while sitting on my lap. I have never seen a bird do that before on my lap. I have to confess though I was very worried about her all day but doesn't appear that she had any subsequent issues due to that bump, thank God. Anyway, I have been trying to get her used to my place. I live in a large condo. I think she's slowly getting accustomed to the lay out but I might have been overzealous in letting her fly too soon. For the times I am at work, I have been leaving the TV on for her and she seems to like that. I think just the sound of people talking gives her some stimulation. I watch her at work with a video camcorder I have near her cage so I can tell how she's doing during the day when I'm not around. So things are going well. I think she is just getting used to her new home and we are getting to know each other better as time goes on. I have been feeding her exactly what she was fed at the bird rescue but tomorrow I am going to throw something different into the mix. In addition to her fruits and veggies (they are large enough to be held with her foot), I am going to try to give her a fine veggie chop with quinoa grains, flowers and a flax/chia mix. We will see if she even goes near it. I also bought her some Nutriberries just as an occasional snack. It's so much fun being a bird mom! I think if Chewie had her way, she would be out of the cage all day. How much out of cage time do your birds normally get on a daily basis? Just wondering....

Good to hear that things are going so well with you and Chewie. Sorry that she collided with the window but it sounds like she's not hurt. It might help avoid future collisions by putting some stickers or suncatchers on the window. That often works to keep wild birds from flying into the outside of the windows so it might work as well to keep an indoor bird from bumping into the glass. Ralph is out of his cage two or three times a day for about 4-5 hours total on average. Some days it's less and rarely a little more. Since he wants to be perched on me, or at least with me the whole time he's out, it's not practical to have him out much more than that. Good job of introducing new foods to Chewie. Of course, it could take several tries just to get her to try something new, so don't give up if she refuses new foods at first. I often mention that it took me 8 months to get Ralph to try broccoli and now it's one of his favorites. Both of you keep up the good work!

Sounds like Chewie is enjoying being spoiled by you. Casey is not a great flyer, he never learned when he was young he must have been clipped before he flew he has banged into the odd wall and sludes tk the floor. i guess not hard as he is always ok. i used to leave his cage open more. But our house is busy and now its open most days at breakfast and every night from dinner to bedtime. He just hangs out on the top and later in the evening he says night night night and goes back inside. Some nights he waits for. kisses, which he always gets before i cover the cage

Hello! Thank you for your feedback. Yes, it seems like Chewie is okay after her collision with the window. She is flying back to normal again and now I just pull the blinds part way and she seems to know not to go in that direction. She loves being out of her cage and really loves just being attached to me, either on my shoulder or on my lap. It's so cute. She could sit on my lap and watch TV with me for hours! I'm still getting to know her so just want to keep her as safe as possible. And yes she is trying new foods and doing a good job at it. She had pomegranate today and she also ate some chick peas so I noticed she liked those which is good. Yep, we are trying and I think we have made great stride so far. She seems to like her new environment and her cage. She's been playing with her toys more too. I'm so thankful for her and I think she really like her new home which makes me so happy! I will be taking her to the vet on Tuesday for a well bird check so will see how that goes. We may get some blood work just to make sure she's free and clear. I'll let you know how it goes! I'll try to attach a picture of her at some point too once I figure out how to do that. I think it would be nice for everyone to see her.

Does chewie get startled by random things and bite? Jasper (Meyers) does that which impacts where ha can go and what he can do.
It’s easier to put a bird on your shoulder but I am a bit afraid to do that with him. I got used to carrying my disabled Quaker but she was the worlds most tolerant bird and would ride around in a scarf. Neither of my current birds would do that. Willow really prefers to ride on his basket and not my shoulder.

Sometimes Chewie gets startled but it's more by things she doesn't like such as napkins, paper towels and hand towels. I'm not sure why she doesn't like those things. But otherwise she's fine on my shoulder. But I think she enjoys being on my lap even more. Yes every bird is so different in terms of what they go for....

It can be hard to figure out why some seemingly innocent things will startle or upset a parrot. My CAG Scooter would almost have a panic attack if I moved any of the small rugs on the floor, and anything bright orange upsets Ralph.
You and Chewie seem to be enjoying hanging out together. It would be difficult to find a parrot that would be as good a fit for you. She's definitely a shoulder bird too.
Chick peas, also called garbanzo beans, are one of Ralph's favorites too. I only tried pomegranate with him once and he wanted nothing to do with it. Next time I decide to get one for myself I'll try again.
Both of you keep up the good work!

[br Jasper gets scared if I pick up something, like a newspaper section to protect my lap from poops. Then the head whips sideways and if I’m contacted it’s a bite. I guess that’s another way to look at it: that Jasper is scared of these objects rather than mad at me for not having all eyes on him. Wish I knew which it was. I thought the bite was because I strayed in my attention from the BIRD.

Haha, yes, we definitely pay if we are not looking attentive enough for Bonnie. She makes her opinion known VERY quickly, either through noise or a nip. Bonnie is completely unafraid of pattering around on the floor with us standing right next to her (which makes me nervous, as when she doesn't make a noise I have to constantly check where she is before I take a step), but is afraid of silly things like a slice of black olive...makes no sense to me at all.

Yes, I remember when I had Freddie, my quaker, he absolutely hated big, large cardboard boxes. As soon as he would see one, he would start to squawk really loud. So I would have to hide them somehow. I think he had a bad experience with a big box once but I can't remember off the top of my head what is was.
It's interesting how one thing will affect them one way and then others won't have any issues at all with that same thing.
Things are going well for Chewie and myself. I am going out of town this week and someone at the bird shelter will be watching Chewie for me in her own home so that will be nice for Chewie as there will be other birds there. I think she finally has the lay out of my place down and she seems to know where to land, whether it be the top of the refrigerator or a chair or my head! She's very smart and I think she has acclimated well. I think she's very happy too. She's been enjoying her veggies. I am still trying to get her used to the Harrison's pellets but realize that may take awhile.
