I acquired some ghost shrimp and put them in with Freckles the betta for company and because he's pretty laid back and I figured they'd be safe with him. They're clear, so they're hard to see unless you peer closely and it's easier if they've eaten recently because then you can see the food inside. I was leaned down next to Freddie's cage peering into the tank to check on them and both Jade and Clyde came over to stick their beaks into what I was doing and one of them chomped my ear. I suspect Jade. Neither one would confess, however. Apparently peering at ghost shrimp is not allowed. So many things are not allowed. I put on a sweater because I was cold and nobody would sit on me.

Well, they have really become (even more) contemptuous of you! Don't worry, Bonnie is well on track to being the same way, despite our best efforts to teach her manners, or even an iota of decency! I do empathise...

This sort of incident describes Shah's reaction to everything I touch or look at. I get screamed at if he is in his cage or, if he is out of the cage, I get a bite and grumbled at. I am trying to bomb proof him at the moment and it is not going well. You have my sympathy - I know exactly what you are going through. It seems that they want all your attention focussed on them and nothing else. Last year we had some chickens in the backyard and if I took him to the window to show him the chickens, I would get bitten for my efforts - I wasnt even allowed to look at them. Quakers are such thugs - except for Ralph.

Ralph is clearly a Quaker amongst Quakers and it's too bad the rest don't follow his excellent example of How To Be a Quaker AND A Gentleman, but comparisons go absolutely nowhere with my gang. I used to ask them why they couldn't all behave nicely, the way Greta did. I'd say "GRETA never bites Mommy!" and all that did was make them shun Greta. I have tried to show Clyde the fish. I used to have a cartoon fish tank screen saver at the old house (and several computers ago) and he LOVED that. He would sit in front of the screen at stare in fascination. So you would think REAL fish really swimming would at least get his attention briefly. If you thought that, you would be wrong. Me: "Look, Clyde, look at the pretty fishies!" Clyde: (unnprintable) Me: "You used to like fish." Clyde: (unprintable) Me: "You could at least look at them before you decide you hate them." Clyde: (CHOMP!)

That Clyde is such a character - I'm sorry but I had to laugh. Like you, I thought Shah would like the betta but I was wrong. He just ignored it - he wouldnt even look at it. He thinks if he doesnt look at things, they dont exist.

Just for the record, the "Gentleman Quaker" bit me on the nose tonight.

maybe he was afraid the others would take back his Quaker Card if he didn't occasionally exhibit Quaker like behavior.

Siobhan, how/where did Clyde learn his 'unprintable' words??? Just wondering.

Just for the record, the "Gentleman Quaker" bit me on the nose tonight. I guess even a gentleman can be driven to un-gentle methods. If you were certain there would be no consequences, who knows what you might attempt to get away with?

Clyde only says "dammit" in English. His unprintable words were in Quaker. That's why they were unprintable. But I know they were naughty. Jade knows some colorful language in English, but she learned it at her former home. We use colorful language occasionally, but we didn't teach her that particular expletive. LOL

Cupcake has no interest in the fish tanks either. She doesn't care at all, which I find surprising. You would think all of those floating creatures and pretty colors would be of some interest.

I'm thinking that Ralph does indeed need to remind me-- and himself-- that he is a Quaker parrot, by behaving like one, at least once in a while. The bite on the nose last night was prompted by my asking Ralph where he wanted to go next. He'd finished looking in the silverware drawer and making sure that his personal spoon was still there, and was ready to move on to something new. Usually, he just points me in the right direction without chomping on me.
