I went to the Smithsonian on my birthday this past Saturday. I came across this display. It's a real shame that these beautiful birds are extinct.

It is a real shame. It would be so cool if these guys were still around.
I love the Smithsonian. So much great stuff. Having lived nearby my whole life I can definitely say I haven't taken advantage of it enough, but it has been great nonetheless.

I grew up in a MD suburb of DC. We went to the Smithsonian EVERY year on a field trip from the time I was in Kindergarten to the time that one got too old to take class field trips. The museum of natural history, to this day, is still my favorite

I grew up in a MD suburb of DC. We went to the Smithsonian EVERY year on a field trip from the time I was in Kindergarten to the time that one got too old to take class field trips. The museum of natural history, to this day, is still my favorite I grew up in and still live in a VA suburb of DC. Natural history is my favorite too, by far! I love that museum. I could spend days there. They are completely revamping the main fossil hall too, which I am excited about. My understanding is that it will have a more modern perspective on dinosaurs, so it will discuss the likelihood that birds are basically little dinos, and show the fossils that have feathers imprints and such. Won't be ready until 2019, but I bet it's going to be amazing.

I havent been there since I moved out of the area in 1999. When my kids were little we'd get on the metro in New Carrolton, ride to the Smithsonian, and spend the day there, with a picnic out by the reflecting pool at the Monument. It was free to get into the Smithsonian at that time, not sure if they charge now. I probably have pictures somewhere of either me or my kids standing in front of the big wooly mammoth elephant thing they had there when you first walked in

Aw, that's some good stuff. It's still free! And that wooly mammoth is still there.

I've been to the Smithsonian twice, years ago, and loved it. I really enjoyed that you could see so much in DC for free. Natural History was my favorite, too, though I won't claim to have seen it all. I love rocks, gem quality or not, and loved theirs.

Did you see the Hope Diamond, Eastex?

I did see the Hope Diamond. I remember I was fairly underwhelmed by it at the time, but I have developed more appreciation for diamonds over the years . I wouldn't mind seeing it again.

The hope diamond is quite beautiful, but the lighting and display makes it look just awful.

See what I mean? I'd expect a better display from the Smithsonian. I took this pic myself, it did not look any better in person. Horrible lighting.

I do agree, the hope diamond display is a bit underwhelming. The diamond itself is certainly impressive though.

it has a pretty cool history, if I remember correctly. Everyone who owned it was cursed
