I was the reporter on breaking news duty yesterday when we heard the scanner traffic about a warehouse on fire. At first it was no big deal but it soon became a very big deal and the biggest fire in our community in 30 years. Our photographer got some spectacular photos (so good the fire department asked for copies so they could display them, LOL) and I got a front page byline, plus I did a follow up story today for another front page byline. My coat still smells like smoke today and I was standing about 100 yards from shooting flames and rolling smoke. If you want to see what I do for a living, though of course something like this doesn't happen every day: herald-review.com/news/local/fire-destroys-warehouse-on-east-grand-avenue/article_6d91962f-25ec-541e-87c7-69216de1d687.htmlThis sort of thing is why I tell people that when I go to work in the morning, I can't be certain what time I'll get to go home. I can estimate, but that's the best I can do.

Those photos are amazing...you would have been very hot! I think being a reporter would be very interesting - I've often thought about it, as my writing has always been quite good, but wouldn't know where to start. I wonder if one has to look like a model (tall and 'willowy') to get a look in? If so, I'm out...5'3"! No wonder Clyde disapproves so much - he's at the mercy of your uncertain schedule and will always make you pay for it!

I suppose TV news cares what the reporters look like, but I work for a newspaper and I can assure you that if model looks were required, I'd be doing something else. LOL A lot of newspapers want you to have a degree in journalism, but mine's in English. I was working at the paper part time doing obits and community news -- basically just typing up stuff that was sent in -- but I had a good boss who let me do the occasional story while I was in college and when a spot opened up and I only had a couple of months left before graduation, I applied, and they knew from the stories that boss let me do that I could handle it, and I got the job.

Good job of reporting. A story like that one helps to compensate for all those dull school board meetings you have to cover.

Since the new superintendent took over, board meetings aren't so bad. This one isn't fond of endless PowerPoint presentations and doesn't keep the whole staff in terror of her temper. She likes to be quick and efficient and meetings aren't nearly as long and painful.

Stunning fire. Must have really been something in person. And a great article! I read the New York Times and the Washington Post (the local paper - I've subscribed a couple times but it is irritatingly amateur and couldn't stand as a model for high school journalism) and I think the writing has noticeably deteriorated in recent years. Poor writing skills, lack of clarity, obvious bias, opinion presented as fact, etc. Nice to read a story in the hands of someone who knows what they're doing.

I meant to add, I've been coughing a lot the last couple of days as a result of all that smoke, and Clyde and Jade have learned to mimic my cough. LOL I was sitting next to Jade's cage last night and coughed and she and Clyde, in perfect sync and harmony, coughed together. That made me laugh, which made me cough more, which made them cough more. The stinkers.
