While my tiels and budgie are willing to eat any food and play with any toy, the Quakers are choosy and insist their toys and food be within specific parameters. LOL So I'd get the cockatiel sized stuff for Paul. My pigeon prefers budgie sized toys while my budgie likes the biggest toys to play with, and the Quakers are most definitely middle-sized ONLY fans. As for being lonely, I can assure you that all eight of my birds wish they were only children, though the two tiels are best buds, so maybe they'd be okay with being the only TWO. If you have to be gone a long time, like during the work day, leave the TV or a radio on for company, but Paul prefers your company to another bird's, trust me.

Congrats on your new feathered friend! Quakers are special. It is important to give them attention in an amount that you can be reasonably consistent about-- overdoing it at first can lead to behavioral problems later if your attention wanes at all. But that said, as much attention as possible within that guideline is best! It is definitely a very good thing that the bird is situated in part of the house where people are frequently walking in and out. As flock animals, they feel a need to be included in everything and will be offended or upset if they feel excluded. If you factor the bird into every family experience as much as possible you will be well on your way to having a happy bird. And remember to positively reinforce even the slightest bit of good behavior ("good bird!" in an enthusiastic voice will do) and ignore anything undesirable. The less reaction you can give when they misbehave the better. There is a reason for everything they do-- it might be a birdly reason, but the better you try to understand how they think, the better your relationship with them will be. Finally, try to encourage interaction with each person in the family. The family dynamics when a bird chooses to bond with one person specifically can get complicated. Every night when Cupcake goes to bed we pass her around and each say goodnight to her in our own way. She doesn't always love it but I really think it has benefitted our family situation over time. Best of luck!!
