I knew it was bound to happen. Ringo is trying to copy Trixie's trill. LOL She trotted that out for me this morning while I was drying my hair. Trixie was singing and Ringo was chattering (they really like to chime in with the hair dryer) and suddenly Ringo made a not-bad attempt at Trixie's trill, right in the middle of "who's my baby?" and "I love you!" Ringo is also trying to teach Trixie to do Johnny's made-up song, which Ringo can copy perfectly, and Beethoven's Fifth, which everyone except Maggie already knows. (Johnny's version of Beethoven is somewhat fractured, but he means well.) And Trixie is VERY interested. Ringo will whistle the Johnny Song, I whistle it back and Trixie goes "tweet tweet?" So we whistle it again and Trixie goes "tweet tweet tweet?" LOL She tilts her little head to the side and gets really focused. We'll see if she starts doing that. Ringo can impersonate every other bird on the place already, so she's not going to leave out these fascinating new sounds coming from Trixie, and Trixie apparently thinks the new sounds she's hearing are pretty cool, too.

That is adorable! Of course Trixie thinks the new sounds she's hearing are cool...because they are! Canaries are very responsive little birds and, while you won't hear any human-sounding speech from them, they are always bright, interesting and perky little companions. And they don't get 'the sulks' like parrots (or husbands...). .

Today she's been playing with every toy in her cage and singing and chirping and she objected heartily when I cleaned her cage -- not the cleaning, but because I took her water away to rinse and refill. She has a sound she makes when she's unhappy or confused. She didn't like the cleaning, either, but she really didn't like having her water vanish even temporarily. LOL But as soon as the cleaning was done and the water was back, she was chirpy and happy again. Very refreshing, after being chomped and pecked and bossed around by all these other birds all this time.

She sounds absolutely adorable. What a nice change - not being chomped or yelled at. You always seem to get such exceptional animals - it must be that flashing light on your forehead that only animals can see that says "Sucker". I see a few people on this forum have this flashing light.

I'm sure it is. Trixie saw me through the glass at Petsmart and said to herself, "I must look as cute and pathetic and needy as possible, because that's my new mommy." When I left that time without getting her, it must have disappointed her horribly. I feel bad about that. But she's here now, and today she even came closer when I was talking to her. Not quite right up to the bars, but it's a start.

I suspect I'll be having a canary sitting on my finger soon. She's gotten brave enough to sit on a perch close to me when I talk to her, and she watches Ringo very closely when Ringo is sitting on me. Maybe she's thinking, "Well, she's not eating THAT bird ..." She has a certain sound she makes in the morning and when I first appear after work that I think is the canary equivalent of "hello, mom!" I really couldn't be more pleased with how she's taken to living in the Ark.

She is learning really quickly. Yep, she had you figured out the moment she saw you. And what a great outcome for her.

Awww, I'm so happy for her and for you! Makes me miss Conan...and (almost - don't worry, Jan!) makes me want to go out and get us another canary. LOL

Her singing is so sweet and pretty and I don't care if it's not like boy canary singing. Someone on the canary forum told me the greeting sound means she's upset and frightened. That's funny, her body language is excited and playful and she usually hops back and forth and jumps on her swing and has a snack and a drink of water and pecks her mirror, too. All those things look like happy bird behavior to me. I ought to know the difference by now. LOL

Yup, she sounds like a very well adjusted birdy.

Trust your own judgement. All my outdoor aviary canaries have their own personalities and sounds (even though they are nearly all brothers and sisters). They jump on my shoulders and when it's breeding season they want nesting material and tug on my hair (although they don't seem to learn that it won't come out)! I love the different sounds they make and you will soon learn what they all mean. Enjoy!

Hey, Siobhan, does Trixie still have a bald head? Just curious.

Yes. I doubt the feathers will grow back before her next molt, whenever that is, and maybe not ever.

Hi there and welcome to the Forum! I'm not sure if Siobhan is still active on here...but in my experience if the canary is eating well and looks healthy I wouldn't worry too much. Not like he's going in the Mr. Canary USA pageant or anything! If you are worried you could schedule a vet visit.
