Hi all, my breeder said that unless Bonnie is in contact with outside birds I don't need to spray her. Well, we have a couple of outdoor aviaries, containing 2 cockatiels, some Bourke's parrots & some canaries. I just started taking Bonnie for 'access' visits to one aviary, so I'm pretty sure I ought to spray her as grasses etc. would blow in to the aviary. Can I use a ready-made (premixed) avian spray & if so, what's the best way of doing it so she doesn't freak out? Also, how often should I spray her? Thanks.

I'm only experienced with indoor birds, who typically don't need to be (and usually shouldn't be) sprayed. My best advice is to check with Bonnie's vet and find out what he/she recommends.

I agree with Gary about checking with your vet. I went through this with my chickens from time to time. The mites I know of hide in cracks and crevices during the day and come out to attack birds at night, so just spraying the bird won't solve the problem. Lice stay with the bird, but you have to time the spray to get multiple generations. I would question the effectiveness of any of the over-the-counter sprays available. If Bonnie does pick up parasites, you'll probably treat her with something like ivermectin.

Thanks guys, will have to find an Avian vet I guess...I suspect the closest one is about an hour's drive away! Maybe I can just ring them up and ask.
