Greta died today. I got her a year ago in May, when a friend of a friend told me she knew a tiel who needed a new home. Greta had belonged to a woman who died, and her partner didn't want her. She lived in a tiny cage with this woman, whose daughter, daughter's boyfriend and their child lived with her. They kept the cage on a desk chair that swiveled, and the little boy, about 3 or 4, spun the chair with the cage on it in my presence and poked things through the bars at poor Greta. I got her out of there as fast as I could and brought her home.
My other two tiels didn't like her and neither did any of the others, but she loved me and I loved her and she was a sweet, docile little thing who only wanted head rubs and kisses to be happy.
I had to work late and supper was ready when I got here, so I didn't go into the birds' room until much later than usual. I always feed the fish first thing, and I found her on the floor next to the first fish tank. She liked to sit on the curtain rod and it looked like she fell from there, but I don't have any idea why. She was perfectly all right when I left for work this morning and I didn't see any visible injury. She's been eating and pooping normally. In spite of six other birds in the room, it seemed so empty without her.
I put her cage in the storeroom so I wouldn't have to look at an empty cage. It was hard enough to sit there with Clyde and Benjy and Maggie in their customary positions and no Greta sitting on my leg waiting patiently for her turn to have head rubs.

I am so sorry. Greta sounded like a bunch of love with wings, and I've enjoyed reading about her. It's a hard thing; the drawback to having pets. But she got a big taste of a good and loving home for over a year, and that's a big thing. Take care of yourself!

So sorry about Greta. She did seem like a sweet little parrot. Once a bird has found a special place in your heart, it does leave an empty place when they leave you. I know you'll treasure your memories of the relatively short time Greta was with you.

I know it's small consolation, but she had a good home with you, so at least she had an enjoyable life in her last year. I'm very sorry.

I am so sorry to read about Greta! You've written about how sweet a little bird she was, it will be so hard to not have her there with you.

I wonder if her collision with Maggie's cage door a couple of weeks prior did some damage I didn't know about that finally caught up with her. She was definitely stunned when it happened, but she was back to normal the next day and had seemed fine after that. Eating and pooping and behaving all just as usual.

It could be, but they're so good at hiding what's wrong with them. I seem to get more than my share of songbird window collisions. I try to keep them for a couple weeks, because I'm told it can take that long for a concussion to really show. I've never lost one that long after a collision, but who knows what happens after I release them.

Val, I just dropped in to say hello and read this heartbreaking post about Greta. I'm so very sorry for your loss. I know she was a little sweetheart and you will miss her forever. Thank goodness you were able to get her out of her awful circumstances and give her a safe, loving home for the time you had her. Never doubt that Greta knew how much she was loved.
Fly free little girl.

Hi Siobhan, I have just read about Greta. Unfortunately I have been very ill recently and in and out of hospital. I am shocked about Greta but I used to foster wild birds that had flown into things and concussion could take up to 2 weeks to show up. Greta had a wonderful life with you and I know you will miss her. She was a lovely little soul. Sending hugs your way.

I haven't been on in some time (I am busy with college,) but I wanted to extend my condolences for your loss. I'm very glad Greta had you, even if your time together was cut short. At least she passed knowing she was loved.
