Hi everyone. I didn't know whether to post this in Diet & Health or Behaviour, but I chose this since it seems more like a health issue.
I have a green quaker parrot named Toby. I have no idea what gender he is, but I call him a he. I've had him for about a year and a half now. He is bonded to me (he is extremely loving, playful and affectionate towards me) and only lets one other person go near him.
For the past few weeks, Toby has been acting very strangely. He absolutely refuses to come out of his cage, which is unlike him. He usually likes to come out for at least a few hours a day to sit on my shoulder and play. This past week I have begun to notice some very strange symptoms... Toby is acting like he has gone blind. His balance is extremely off, making him very clumsy. When I stick out a treat he likes, he does his usual, runs on his perch towards my hand, but instead of immediately grabbing the treat he has to fumble around with his beak to find it... something he has never done before. On top of that, when I finally managed to get him out of his cage, I set him on top of the cage and placed a few banana pieces on it. He did not acknowledge them at all until I grabbed one and basically touched it to his beak to let him know it was there; he immediately began eating it, but when I dropped it right in front of him he couldn't find it. He only ate it when I held it directly to his face, which once again, is very strange.
Furthermore, when holding Toby, he will not step up onto my finger, his cage, perch, or any other material without first touching it with his beak. He has never done this before and it seems like he cannot see the object and is using his beak to locate it in order to step up. When I stick my finger in front of him to step up, he does not react at all until I slightly nudge his talons with it in which he touches the finger with his beak and then steps up. It's like a blind man using his cane in order to locate himself. Also, Toby is usually terrified of foreign objects coming near him. I put the phone (something he despises) to his face, and he did not react at all. I put it nearer to him and all he did was touch it with his beak and lick it. I did the same with a cloth and he had the same reaction.
Other than that, Toby is eating more than usual and is drinking his water. His droppings are wetter than usual and are dark green in colour with the normal white. I'm extremely worried about this. There are no avian vets near me, so I'm afraid a vet won't be able to properly diagnose him. I'm going to be making an appointment for him within the next few days, but I'm hoping someone here has some sort of knowledge about this.
Thank you
