Hello I recently rescued a Quaker and have no prior experience with Quakers. He was a run-away or let go (not sure) that I got after someone found him and brought him to a shelter where he was unclaimed. He seems to have bonded to me instantly and will only let me touch him (my husband can if he has food and the bird is not on my shoulder). He has been checked by the Vet and his healthy but the vet was unable to determine his age, other than to tell me he is an "adult". He has some great skills, like being potty trained, laughing, shaking his head yes, giving kisses, nuzzling my cheeks, and doing a pretty birdie head move and some nice whistles. He is very loving to me and looks at me like I am the best thing since sliced bread (ha!) and has a good deal of my attention. But he has only been with me for about 2 weeks now. He is out of his cage all day, as long as I am home and I have been working from home every day, so I am sitting right beside him pretty much most of the day. He has a big cage and a tall perch on top, tons of toys and a nice varied supply of foods (Romaine, seeds, pellets, and occasional egg and crackers). He is now comfortable enough in my home to fly and follow me if he isn't on my shoulder. I hope this isn't too much background, but I figure it is good to have the information for responses.
Unfortunately he also has some bad habits.....
1. He screams whenever I leave the room and won't stop until I am back.
2. He screams, a lot.... A LOT Like through most of the day. He has varying types of screams and tries them all out. I am trying to ignore the screams and it makes him screech more and at full volume and flaps his wings over and over and change his tone again. I am also trying to reward him by talking to him when he is quiet or making a nicer noise, but when he is quiet and I praise him, most of the time that just seems to make him set off into a new set of screams at me again. He will do this on his perch or when he is on my shoulder.
3. He does not like to go into his cage, once he is in there, he is good. He knows step up and down and will do it when he wants to, but never to get into his cage. He was good for the first few days to step onto my finger and for me to place him in there, but now he has started to bite my hand when he sees he is going into the cage.
I have read a lot of the posts on here and it has been helpful, but any and all tips and tricks would be great, since it doesn't appear he is bored or lonely or need new toys or different food and he has a good deal of freedom, but maybe he has too much out of cage time? Maybe I am spoiling him or he still feels abandoned from his last house or his brief life of freedom outdoors?
Thank you in advance for any suggestions!
