Hi,I bought a Blue Quaker about a month ago from a breeder. It is 7 months old.The breeder never taught the bird to stepup instead she used to grab it and bring it out of the cage.I named it Poppit.I refer it as a male but don’t really know what sex it is. Poppit is very scared of my hand and I’ve had a few nasty bites. At this stage he will come to front of the cage when I approach him and I give him a piece of almond.I open the cage door and he comes out when he’s ready,I don’t force him out.
The breeder cut both wings, so he has to walk around his cage cause he can’t fly.
When he does come out he tries to fly to me but flops to the ground. He will walk over to wherever I am but then when I go to let him jump on my arm he Bites, and bites hard. He wants to be with me but as soon as he sees my hands that’s it ,I get bitten.I hand feed him sunflower seeds and almonds and whatever and he takes it from me without a drama. So now I have to put on a extra sleeve on my arms to protect myself. He will sit on me for ages and investigate what I’m doing.
How can I get him not to bite.I really believe that the breeder made him scared by forcefully picking him up.I have read heaps about these parrots being cage aggressive so I change his food and water when he’s out of the cage or bribe him to other end of the cage with a nut.I tickle his head and back when he’s on me BUT only with the sleeve of my jumper .He loves it and puts his head down for more.I want to be able to do it with my hand and no extra sleeve.
I don’t work so I’m with him everyday all day.
I really need some help with this hand fear he has.
Also when I bought him home I bought lots of toys,BUT he doesn’t touch them EVER.
He will be a lovely little boy but just have to get him to feel safe that my hands want to love him not hurt him.
Hope you can help.Ive watched heaps of YOUTUBES on the subject but my brain is over loaded with all the different ways.
Thanks in advance.
