Buddy had always been great about stepping up from inside the cage but all this week she has refused and I've had to pick her up and put her on my finger. There are two things that i think may have triggered this. Last Friday i put her in her carrier for a visit and she freaked out so that's possibly one reason. The other is that when i found out on Friday that she was a girl, i removed a basket that was in her cage that she loved and spent most of her time on. I thought i should remove it to prevent any nesting situation down the road. She's fine stepping up outside of her cage so i think is cage related. Did i do the right thing removing the basket?

We do have to accept punshment for our bad behavior now and then. Ralph doesn't like going into his transport cage either, but all is forgiven when I let him out of it. Nesting shouldn't be an issue with so young a parrot as Buddy, so you might be able to put the basket back for now. At any time she shows any signs of nesting behavior, you could remove it then (and get punished again).

I agree with cnyguy, you could probably put it back since she is young but I would make sure I moved it around the cage weekly so she doesn't get used to defending a certain spot. The rescue I got Casey at advised me never to use one of those sleeping tents or anything that could be construed as a nesting area. Though there are some people that have them and it works for them, I've just never tired.

Haha, welcome to MY world. My husband and I get punished every 2nd day or so for some imagined slight or misdemeanour...j Our Bonnie has a Happy Hut, but I have to say she seems to want to be in it a little TOO much, clucking and turning in circles etc. (nesting behaviour). When this gets too much I take it out and just put in a cloth-covered ledge. The first time we did this she was NOT AMUSED, but she adapted quickly. Don't be afraid to try new things with your little girl, as quakers are very flexible (they just might put up a noisy fight at first!).

I did add a shelf for her covered with a crocheted jute mat that i made and she hasn't taken to it much. But i figure it's there for her is she gets tired of being on perches all the time. Her choice!
