Last night the power flickered off. And on. And off. And on. And finally off and stayed off. After dark. On the coldest day we've had so far (in the teens!). We have an oil lamp and a battery-powered camp lantern and we each had a flashlight, but that didn't help the birds much. I took my flashlight and went into the birds' room to make sure nobody was freaking out. Jade had gone to bed. Benjy was sitting on Clyde's open door, where he sleeps. Freddie and Clyde were on boings and Clyde was NOT happy. I put Clyde in his cage and he was still NOT happy. I told them I didn't shut off the lights, but that didn't help. We put Rocky in his cage and covered him (he won't settle down until he's covered; he's the only one). Ringo was on top of her cage in her room so she was okay. We had to cook supper and eat by lantern light. Of course, with no furnace, it got pretty chilly pretty fast and the power was off for a couple of hours. A broken wire that shut off our whole end of town.
When the power came back, of course all the lights came back on, too (and the HEAT, thank goodness) and the birds promptly decided it was morning and went to chirping. I turned the furnace up to warm up the house as fast as possible but by then it was almost their regular bedtime. Even Rocky, who never wants to go to bed, was ready for bed because they'd all been snoozing in the dark and didn't want to wake up anyway. LOL
I had to get up and go to work extra early this morning, so their early bedtime actually worked out. They weren't grouchy when I had to wake them early because they were already up, except Ringo, whose room is on the west side of the house and was still pretty dark. She's a good girl, though, and didn't gripe.
