If i buy wood from the local lumbar yard to build a stand, is spruce or pine safe? I can get both, I could also get cedar. I'm working on a natural branch stand using maple branches and I will need a base.

As long as they're untreated and unfinished, those woods should be OK. If you plan to set a large branch in a stand, an alternative would be to set the branch in a sturdy Christmas tree stand. I've done that-- I made a playstand for Ralph from a large, thick magnolia branch that was knocked down in a winter storm, and set it in a Chritmas tree stand I wasn't using.

I wouldn't get cedar. Get pine and make sure it's untreated (the salesman may not know the difference or realize how important it is). Hubby is a carpenter and he gets untreated pine to make chew toys and play stands and perches for Rocky 'Too. Rocky, of course, destroys all of it in due course, but Hubby knows the difference between treated and untreated himself, so he doesn't have to count on the salesman to know which is which.
