Thanks to Facebook memories, I knew it was close to time for Clyde's annual berserker mode phase and sure enough, it started this weekend. He had been sitting on my hand letting me scritch and everything was fine. He walked up my arm, which he does to go to my shoulder, suddenly stopped, stared at my arm, and then CHOMP and he wouldn't let go. He was flappinjg and squawking and twisting and left me with a nasty bruise and welt. He did that three times over the last couple of days. I've been trying to keep him off my arm and just have him on my hand or shoulder, but he's a wily little brat. So last night everybody went to bed at 7 p.m. He has a certain sound he saves for when he's in berserker mode and he's been making it even when I'm not in the room, so three other birds have to go to bed early and not get attention because of one vicious punk of a Quaker. My arm looks like I've been in a brawl.

Better invest in a suit of armor. Hope Clyde will be back to his usual self quickly.

These QPs are little Psychos! Bonnie does this sometimes to my husband (more recently she flew at my face to attack), but we can never pinpoint a particular season to be prepared, as in Darwin we never have cold weather (it's always between 30-36 degress Celsius all year round). Hope your arm recovers well...

I had to work late last night and they didn't get put to bed (because I have to PUT them to bed; they won't just go to bed when they're ready) until almost 10. They usually go to bed about 8:30. I expected Clyde to be worse than ever this morning because he was last night when I tucked them in, but he was fine this morning. Gave me a nice kiss, sat on my hand like a gentleman as I fed fish and opened curtains. We'll see how he is tonight. Having to wear long sleeves so people can't see the bruises is a pain. LOL And people won't ASK "What happened to your arm?" so you can tell them it was a parrot and not that you got into a fight.

I'm sure the people who read your newspaper column know it was crazy Clyde.

I don't have a column. I cover news stories. People who read my articles probably don't know the first thing about me unless they know me outside of work.

Whoops, my mistake. :0 I thought you had a regular column. Well, I guess all your friends will know the "real" story!

I have a feature they call a "column," but it's not one in the traditional sense. That is, I don't talk about myself or what I think about things. It's just the same kind of stories I cover anyway -- education issues and school events -- but it appears the same day every week with my picture attached. It would be really tricky for me to simultaneously have a column and to cover news stories because being objective and keeping myself OUT of stories is the whole point of good journalism.
Clyde is less crazy the last day or so. We had a friend over and Freddie displayed and the guy said to me, "Is that good or bad?" LOL And Clyde was making his hormone season sound and saying "pretty birrrrrd" which is a precursor to Crazy, so I was trying to hurry the friend out of their room without being rude. Clyde has to sit on my shoulder when someone he doesn't know well is about, either so HE can protect ME or maybe so I can protect HIM. LOL And I didn't want his crazy to come out with our friend there.

Oh, these weirdo QPs have us hypervigilant, don't they? It just makes me all the more impressed that Gary can take Ralph to visit the nursing home and nobody gets chomped...but then that is why he's called the Gentleman Quaker.

I was able to sit with the little birds and watch a DVD last night and Clyde was pretty well-behaved, for him. LOL
