adopted my friend Chico from a reputable bird store. he was 8 months old and had not been trained to step up from his cage. Employees had been letting him fly to the floor then asking him to step up. After years trying to change this behavior I am stuck. I am fairly experienced at bird training and have trained several of my friends over the years. Problem is Chico was very set in his ways. He is very cage territorial so the usual putting your hand in front of him and encouraging him I only get pecked at. Once he is on the floor and steps up he is very cuddly and enjoys sitting on my shoulder for long periods of time. Anyone have any advice on how to retrain him?

Maybe you could hold a perch in front of him instead of your hand/finger? And hold a little treat in your other hand so he has to step onto the perch to reach it? Just a thought. Yes, they can be very stubborn and cage territorial - our Bonnie is like that and we got her at 8 weeks old. It's kind of built-in behaviour so can take a bit to redirect. I don't think Bonnie will ever change, but then again we haven't put the necessary time into training her. Cheers.

Yeah buddy is like this to me on occasion..I just encourage him to fly a couple feet to a t stand ..away from his sacred play tops. From there,he's easy to pickup. Voice infliction is a good thing as your always wanting to convey " everything is ok" ,to your bird. When buddy's being nasty on his playtop,I sometimes sweet talk him, distract him anyway I can,or..just fold my arms...no fingers showing, over his cagetop rail, and he eventually drops his guard and crawls uo to my shoulder where I can easily pick him up.
