As a newbie to the forum I've been reading through old posts and came across the posts under the "Free Samples" thread. I could tell Gracie really was not enthused with her breeders pellet brand and each day was a challenge to get her to eat them. Crushed, natural fruit juice sprinkled, mixed, didn't matter. Yuck is yuck no matter how I dressed it up,she was on to me! After reading the thread and weighing commentaries, I went out and found Roudybush Crumbles (someone in the thread said their QP liked it the best). Brought it home and my Gracie has eaten her Roudybush Crumbles, given herself a bath, and eaten her Crumbles 4 more times in the past 45 minutes! I believe I Have a hit! She approves! Thank you all so much for your insight and suggestions to those of us looking for answers!

Great news ! In a lot of ways, they can be like people. Eat the same things every day, then get sick of it and it's on to something else. Good thing he's young and willing to try a lot of different things too! I've heard good things about roundybush, but since the big chains have put the little mom and pop pet stores to rest, availability of variety dissappears..funny how that works. Budz eats zupreem,3 different kinds mixed, but will cherry pick his favorites to the point that I just give him smaller portions so that he eventually finishes his bowl. On the fresh side,he's great and enjoys a lot of different veggies ect. Which ones does he eat?

Lol! She it is, but that's okay, I won't tell her! Actually, the only thing I've put in front of her that she completely hated were those breeder-sold pellets! She's not afraid to try anything and eats broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, sugar snaps, green beans, romaine, banana, all-natural banana chips oranges, papaya, apple (no seeds),and tangerines all eaten with gusto. If she drops it while eating she gets very still and waits for me to retrieve it or bring her another! She's a little bit spoiled. I want to try her with mango, watermelon, zucchini, brown rice. We're still experimenting. The Roudybush I bought her is called "Maintenance". What other types of Zupreem do you buy to mix in for Budz?

Budz mix is the Fruitful blend, 60%,Pure fun, which is a smart seed blend and 10 % treat rewards or something. I have no real problem with zupreem, but it is artificially colored. I don't know if it's bad for them, but ya wouldn't think so since it's a "science "based diet. He likes it,but eats a lot of fresh stuff as you describe. Even artichoke leaves ! He knows how to scrape the flesh with his beak ! Also...somehow...I think..hand fed babies just get used to being hand fed and come to expect it as adults. Too easy to spoil !

Indeed...And too easy to love! Here's another thought: I've been trying to decide if making birdie bread or chop is a good idea? If her Roudybush crumbles have everything she needs for a healthy diet as breeder stated, then why would she need birdie bread or chop in addition to it? Very confusing 🙃.

A good diet for a parrot needs variety. Vegetables, fruits, and grains should be included. Birdie bread and chop aren't essential, but would add variety to the parrot's diet and provide additional nutritional value.

There are various chop recipes people have posted here on the Forum. I haven't done chop myself, but I *should*....

Good point, biteybird! I've been giving her fresh veggies and fruit, 3 or 4 varieties on her plate, whatever I find at the store that I think she'll like. So far she likes everything I give her! Guessing this is okay although chop would indeed give her a lot more variety in a smaller pakage. Sounds as though it could be a bit pricier putting it together but it does sound like fun! I'm thinking a food processor would be good to mix it all together, slowly of course, so its not liqified. Wouldn't want that, then I'd have to drink it! Lol!🤢

One thing that I have done..and still do ,is to put everything on his forage rock in their own spots. This way I can see what he's hitting on and which he shuns without whipping it all over the place. Funny cause it looks like a gourmet salad bar ! As far as making my own birdie items...I'm always busy in the kitchen and budz has become my sous chef. If you have a spice grinder, you can combine a tablespoon of ground wheat berries, lentils, dry peas, buckwheat flour, farro, whatever as.long as its a good protien source. Next combine 3 to 4 tbsp of the ground flours with a little egg and a little water till ya get a pancake mix consistency. Dry fry little pancakes in a non stick pan till done. Cool and chop then up. Makes 6 little cakes the size of quarters. From there,I just sit him on his perch and give him one to munch on,and keep the rest refriderated .cute ! I use a ceramic coat pan, which has its pluses, but many drawbacks for every day use..but in this,it allows ya to cook with no oil or butter, but you can easily burn items.
