Hello everybody! Still not having any luck with the step up training.Baby boy blue is becoming a little vocal (cute sounds),he still is biting hard,I am still able to give him a scratch and rub his cheeks so that's nice.I don't no what kind of treat to give him he doesn't like fruit yet and has trouble holding sunflower seeds any ideas? What about peanut butter or is he to young? He has been here just over a week now I really hope he becomes friendly, I watched this woman on line and she has a quaker and said if you want a parrot that doesn't bite a quakers not for you. They bite not because their mean they just bite weather bonded or not is this true? All parrots bite I get that but the way she made it sound that generally quakers are'nt friendly Any tips or thoughts? Thanks For treats..I use walnut crumbles...small pieces. He handles them easily and finishes them quickly, keeping his attention on target. These are his favorites along with little green pumpkin seeds called pepitos,in the Latin isle of your grocery store. I don't agree that quakers bite just because they are or aren't inherently mean or whatever. Buddy,my little guy, will play bite..they always try to assert dominance. Sweet talking him is easy when he doesn't want to step up..voice infliction is an important tool to have. Just a comforting signal. Also, how you position yourself to him. A t stand, sitting on top of a tv tray is something you should use. I made 2 of them. When I'm standing next to it,I'm above his head, when sitting in a chair,I'm slightly below eye to eye...so less of a " threat in his mind. I also have hand signals, coupled with a sweeter voice when I want to scratch his chest,or get him to come along with me..I'll have 1 finger, pointed up,moving the front knuckle up and down while saying " tickles??" He knows this is a peace gesture and sticks his chest out for me to lightly fluff has feathers. From there I offer his favorite walnut crumb, then show him my open palm and say " let's go! ". So I'm able to take him anywhere or give him some shoulder time. Never let him sit on your head tho as they see this as a way of dominating you. They will try often, but remove him when he does. As for the t stands, get him to fly from one to the other, starting out at short distances 1 to 2 ft,and gradually further apart. It's important that he's away from his "protected "area, which for buddy is his cage tops and play areas. Also,no food cups or toys on the stands as you want his full attention..reward him when he completes a flight to you. While he eats his treat, walk to the other stand and call him. This exercise gets him accustomed to coming to you,and he will be more willing to step up onto your finger or open hand after a few times..this is fun to buddy and he hops to his stand and chirps me..so I say " wanna fly ? " they become attention mooches in no time ! Another thing I do for fun is we have "movie time " ...popcorn and all ! I use my cell phone to play quaker videos to him. He immediately hops to my shoulder to watch! It's funny cause he sees and hears, then looks at me,then back to the screen in such as way as to say " really? !! Great way for the both of you to learn and spend quality time together ! Best wishes !

For treats I use safflower seeds and millet seeds because they are his favorite. If you want to use sunflower seeds maybe try offering them without the hull.
