We lost Otey yesterday morning (see post in other section) and we're not sure how to handle the situation with Aldo. He and Otey have shared a cage for the past 3 years or so. Aldo is only around 8-9 years old now.
When I found Otey on the floor of the cage yesterday morning, he had apparently just passed and Aldo was on the floor beside him, grooming him as usual. We covered up Aldo so we could take Otey out, and although Aldo watched us examine Otey, after a few minutes he went back to playing with his favorite toys. He didn't seem to miss Otey until last night, when we went through our nite-nite routine and he was on his perch alone.
Today he seems to be missing Otey. He's eating and drinking normally but he's really quiet. We're retired, so my husband works on the computer in the bedroom so there's almost always someone in or near the room. Plus the other birds are in there, too, so the only thing that has changed is Otey is missing. We've been talking to Aldo, singing his favorite songs, giving him grapes and any other extra attention we can think of.
As intelligent as quakers are, it's not unreasonable to think they might mourn, at least for a little while. We've only had Aldo for about 3 years, and he was alone when we adopted him from his original family.
I'm sure someone else on here has gone thru a similar situation and can offer some advice. We're thinking about possibly getting another quaker to share the cage but at this point in our lives, we're more concerned about OUR ages. At 63 & 64, we don't want them to outlive us.
