I have been feeding Birdy ( 8 month old male) a diet of pellets, bean/quinoa mash in the evening and a variety of fresh veggies and some fruits during the day. I have noticed that he absolutely goes mad for chicken, salmon and egg. I have fed him a few very tiny pieces of fish and chicken maybe once a week and if we are having eggs, he usually gets a little in his bowl. How much protein is too much? I am a bit worried about it damaging his kidneys. But he seems to ADORE meat and unlike his other foods he never throws it out of his bowl and eats every last morsel. Any thoughts much appreciated

Buddy,my quaker is 16 months. Like birdy,he goes nuts for chicken and fish, but especially for salmon and shrimp! He gets a daily portion of " raw" protien (raw meaning unprocessed no oils, fats, salt, sugar added, but cooked) to the tune of 1/4 tsp,or what would cover a dime. Most pellet diets are formulated to 15 percent protien. As far as grains go,soybean has the most. The little greenish brown pellets for zoo or farm animals are soybean meal. They contain the highest amount at 44 percent,so anything close to them like black eye peas, beans ect.,is gonna be on the high side..wheat is 14 percent, but most all other grains come in at 8 percent for corn,or lower. But again, given the amount in pellets and fresh veggies,I would think it would be hard for him to consume too much protein before he became full from the other items. Livestock is fed a high protein diet because it puts muscle, tissue on an animal at a high rate, especially when young. Your lil guy is young and still developing,so don't worry! There's your agri science backround for ya ! All that aside, they become theives! Turn your back and they're helping themselves, gorging like it's now or never! Cheers Good to have ya in the forum.

Hi there dinucci, thanks for the kind welcome, it is good to be here. An agri science training comes in useful! You are right. Turn your back and they're right into it, head down tail up! Greedy little things they are.

Yes they have a way of conditioning us to this behavior don't they? My buddy makes me laugh even when he's being a pest and getting into things he shouldn't be.
