Oh no! I hope Niki's OK. Sounds like he has had this infection before. Is it a topical infection? Thank you for the comments on Kiwi's care, I try, but, I think it's natural to second guess yourself, you know? The vet said he had a secondary infection initially, so he was getting antibiotic injections, twice day the first week he was at the vets. She admits that might have impacted the second set of labs she did. This last set though, she has no idea. The only thing we can both think of, and she said, Human beings process the results, and human beings can make mistakes...but every time? Just doesn't make any sense. So, how do they treat Niki's infection? Hope it's a false alarm.

When niki gets these infections, it varies. Last time, it was his ear. She said it was teaming with yeast. He also had a bacterial infection in his butt. She usually puts him on an antifungal, sometimes antibiotics but i always give them to him orally. I didn't know they can do antibiotics by injection. Sounds scary.
That's a little worrisome with the labs.
How is Kiwi today?
I'm still not sure about niki. Yesterday he scratched a lot and seemed uncomfortable. I don't know how much of that is his being frustrated he can't preen his back. He seemed better today. No more feather loss by his ear. I hate to take him to the vet if i don't have to. There goes another $300 at least! I'll keep watching him

Kiwi seems to be getting stronger daily. He is currently eating a little crumbled birdy bread mixed in with his sprouts, so he is quiet and content. I had the audacity to feed my german shepard first this morning, and he was throwing a fit. "Mommy, yummy, Mommy, yummy!!!" I said just a minute Kiwi, I have to fix it, to which he replied, "Mommy bad boy". When he acts like that, it's hard to believe he is so sick. The injections were scary. He had 22 total, I think she said, plus 3 blood draws, and his fluids were also injected twice daily, while he was at the vets. I hated any time she came near him with a needle, and so did he! Even when she was afraid he wouldn't make it through the night, she said he would try to bite her. (I think it's because she gave him so many shots) And, I know I'm being a total Mom here, but when she took blood, the first time, I was like, "Um, excuse me, can you please leave him some?" She thought this was very funny...I was less than amused. I'll keep my fingers crossed for Niki, hopefully it will resolve itself. I wonder if a little plain yogurt might help. Make sure it's light, don't want to do anything to tax the ole liver. Kiwi loves yogurt, I give him about a half a teaspoon once a week. I eat yogurt to avoid yeast infections, just wonder if it might help Niki balance it out on his own. Just a thought.

I'm so glad he's getting better! The only injections Niki has ever had were for fluids for hydration. We have had some very trying moments with me trying to get him to take meds orally. I am thinking now that Niki does not have an infection as he seems much better. It could be he was having a bad day.
I have given him yogurt in the past. He is very fussy though He gets tired of foods and won't be consistent in eating them.
Who is your avian vet? Just curious...

Hi, Kiwi and I are having a stand off. I want him to eat his sprouts, and he would like something else, I ignored him and he finally gave up and ate! Yay! Score one for Mom! Julie Burge DVM is his vet. She is located in Grandview Mo, and my understanding is she is also on the Mo state board. I think she is excellent, but I'm not nearly as big of a fan of the lab she is using. She specializes entirely in birds, and boy does she know her stuff. I know without her help, Kiwi would not have made it this far. Of course, I have no desire to have blood work drawn again any time soon. Since all his labs always come back so terrible, I figured I'd give him a month or so before doing blood work again. Glad to hear Niki is doing better.

OK, everyone has scared the Dickens out of me....Skye is 8-up, no just turned 9 and I noticed a while back that his beak is darker than it used to be. At that time he was eating a lot-well only 3 a day-but blueberries and he enjoys making a mess. His feet look fine but to be honest he has never been to a vet his entire life...guess I am a bad mom..Should I be concerned with his beak looking grayish??

A Quaker parrot's beak is typically horn-colored (tan). That's true for a blue QP as well as a green one. If you're concerned about Skye's beak, or have any other things that you're unsure of, a vet visit would be a good idea.

Thank you Cynguy for the information. I will take him this week if I can.

I'm in agreement with everyone else about the biopsy. Birds seem to be much more sensitive to both anesthesia and surgeries than larger animals, so unless there's some compelling reason to check (such as a suspected tumor,) I'd opt out.
I'm so glad Kiwi is coming along nicely!

I totally agree with Cynguy regarding vet visit. If your concerned about anything, best to have it checked out, and while your there, you can ask any other questions you may have. Thanks Benegesserit, he keeps keeping on, and at this point as long as he appears to get better, regardless of what the blood work says, I am going to be thankful. He has started running when he sees me coming with the syringe to give him his meds. He used to just open his little beak and take it, now I have to catch him, hold him on his back and make him take it. To me this is a good sign that he is getting better. Now don't get me wrong, he still takes lots of naps during the day, but I think he's showing progress...a little at a time.

Kiwi's mom, that is exactly how Niki would react when he saw the syringe. At first, I think he knew he was sick and he needed the meds, but when he started to feel better, no way! I started changing up the times I would give it to him and that helped. If he got used to after dinner, I changed it to before dinner or just before bed. These guys always keep you on your toes!
