Our apartment has the original 1970's cabinets, which weren't the best quality when new. One of the cupboard doors is rather noisy when opened and closed-- it creaks then squeaks. Ralph likes to be in the kitchen, and he thinks the noisy door is entertaining-- he bobs his head so I'll open and close it so he can enjoy the funny sounds it makes. He's learned to do a reasonably accurate imitation of the creaking sound it makes. Now Scooter has picked up the squeak, and, of course, imitates it precisely. They get more fun from that crummy cupboard door that they would from a roomful of parrot toys.

So now you have three squeaky doors instead of one....oh joy.

Now that's funny ! I have a door that does the same thing and peaks his interest. One thing he did end up imitating was my sneakers squeaking on the floor. I had to stop a few times to look for water, then stopped altogether only to find it was him making the noise ! Cheers.

So now you have three squeaky doors instead of one....oh joy. Well, really only two, since each parrot contributes half the sound that the door makes. I think it will be a while before I finally get to move (a few more months anyhow), but I'm hoping that when I do, I'll have a better kitchen-- but the kitchen must have two things-- a dishwasher for Ralph to play in, and a noisy cupboard door to entertain both parrots.

Glad to finally find recent posts as I was getting frustrated that all were over two years old it kept showing me. Rocky likes the different pings h can make on his cage and my window blinds.

Does Rocky fly nene? Do you allow him to fly around the house? I am just curious. Oscar has been clipped since he was a baby and even though he has beautiful full fledged wings... he won't fly. He doesn't know that he can and that is fine by me... lol

HA HA. What great names for a pair of Quakers. My friends say that Pidge sounds creaky over the phone

All of mine have learned to mimic Rocky's scream. It's bad enough I have to listen to Rocky when he shrieks, now I have to listen to budgie, tiel, Quaker and starling versions of it, too. Freddie in particular is very proud of his new skill. All in all, I'd rather have a squeaky cabinet door impersonation.

I'm surprised that, after almost two years, Scooter isn't imitating Ralph's little squawks. Maybe they're not loud enough for her to bother with-- she'd probably think a 'Too's scream was more fun to mimic, like your flock does. She does imitate me imitating Ralph saying graaaccckkk, and will sometimes say that when I ask her what a Quaker parrot says.

Do they make fun of your cough or sneeze? Clyde does. I spend pretty much all winter coughing and sneezing so he has lots of opportunity. Jade watches me kiss the other birds and makes a kissing sound when she sees me going in for a smooch. I can't really kiss her because I'd like to keep my face, but I make the sound and touch her beak with my finger. I suspect she's making fun of me, too.

Ralph does his own version of a sneeze, sometimes on request; it's a rather delicate "Choo! Choo!" that he does, unlike my sneezes which could demolish a brick building. I had to teach him to sneeze because he used to get startled when I sneeze-- as Scooter sometimes still does. If I give them warning that a sneeze is imminent, then nobody gets upset-- it's the unexpected ones that bother the birds. I've had two long, drawn-out colds this winter and have been doing plenty of coughing, sneezing and nose-blowing. It's the last one that Scooter picked up on. Sometimes when she sees me reach for the box of Kleenex she'll do her nose-blowing sound. Nobody coughs yet (except me). George the YCA did-- his imitation cough, learned in one of his previous homes, sounded terrible. If I coughed, George started in with his powerful coughs. Though he doesn't imitate them, Ralph enjoys my coughs and bobs his head to encourage me to keep coughing.

They're so cheeky! Bonnie does a kissing noise whenever my husband and I go to give each other a peck, also if she hears one of us say "I love you" to the other. She does a 'zip' noise when we put something in our backpacks. Bonnie hates the sound of the coffee machine and squawks incessantly when it is on. She also does her most objectionable squawk when one of us sneezes or coughs. Anyone would think it's the end of the world.

Shah coughs and coughs and coughs. He doesn't know when to stop. I hate coughing because I know he will repeat it over and over until I go insane. He also laughs when I laugh - I used to think it was cute. Someone once said it was like me laughing in stereo. However, I have noticed recently that his laugh is sounding a bit over the top almost like an insane person laughing. No, my laugh does not sound like that

Oscar does the sneeze very well. He does not just sneeze ahhh choo... but goes... ahhh ahhh choo... (always two ahh ahh) and over and over again. It really sounds cute. I managed to tape the sound of him doing this on my cell phone. Now I can prove to people that he actually can talk... however.. I guess a sneeze really isn't talking. He also has the laugh like Shah... a little insane crackle. He will laugh when I laugh but I laugh so loud that no one can hear him... ha ha ha
Lately I am working on him saying "I am a Quaker Parrot"... I know other Quakers have said this.. and it sounds so cute I just got to get Oscar to say it to.

I generally tell people who ask if my birds "talk" that they "mimic" (which includes whistling and sound effects; my starling is very fond of sound effects) and then I add that we "communicate" just fine, which includes so much more.
