Hi Gypsydove, we put 2-3 tablespoons of pellets in Bonnie's dish each day and usually there is some left over. We also put in some Cockatiel/Medium Parrot seed, but not much (say a teaspoon). Then she gets little bits and pieces of our leftovers, only safe foods (i.e., no avocado or chocolate) along with some peas, corn, white rice, mushroom, fruit, etc. Quite often she'll ignore what we give her in favour of spending time with us!

LOL BecciLouise too funny!
Also is it just Teflon or any nonstick type pans...just stainless ones? Another reason I've been lollygagging I need to make sure everything is ready and safe for any feathered babies...
I never had any issues in past though it has been awhile since I've had an indwelling fid and you all while entertaining and informative...has given me a bit of anxiety about them none of my fids were kleptomaniacs or too terribly mischievous... house proofing for a Quaker...any advice?
No candles Teflon pans leaving already a environmental type use all natural cleaners... looking for adequate toys though not sure on sizes... collecting foraging ideas and supplies as well... also did someone mention a birdied heater for these guys?? What is it called and how safe. Feels like I'm nesting a bit LOL!

Hey gypsydove! Good to hear you're doing your homework. I definitely think that's best. It's really important that all parrots, but Quakers in particular, have a pellet-based diet along with fruit and vegetables that is supplemented by seed. I feed Maya KAYTEE's exact Rainbow Cockatiel Mix, though the small parrot mix would also be fine, it's just that Maya finds the smaller pellets easier to chew, but Harrison's, Haagen, Pretty Bird and Zupreem are all good brands too and will make sure your bird has all the nutrients they need. Quakers are prone to fatty liver disease, which is caused by too much fat build up and seeds are very fatty. Maya has a few flax seeds and the occasional sunflower seed to supplement her diet, but mostly I feed her nutriberries in addition to her KAYTEE's because they also include dried fruit and veg with pelleted seeds. Maya also has broccoli, red pepper, apple, grape, pomegranate seed and blackberries. She an also eat (but doesn't like) carrot, BOILED sweet potato, BOILED green bean and spinach, as well as banana. DON'T FORGET that avocado is POISONOUS to parrots so don't feed them that! Maya always has pellets in her bowl and, when I'm home, I give her a separate bowl of fresh fruit and veg so her diet is very varied. Occasionally, she also has some pasta, some boiled pulses, some sprouted lentils and the odd bit of toast. Anything like bread and pasta, though, I'm very careful not to give her too much as it can build up in their crop. As a rule, they can have a little bit of anything that doesn't include: extra added salt, too much sugar, chocolate, dairy, caffeine, alcohol or avocado but anything that isn't directly part of their natural diet should be monitored and given rarely and as a treat. It's important for a parrot's emotional wellbeing that it has a varied diet and have plenty of calcium, protein, vitamins C, D and E and various minerals. A well rounded pelleted diet will provide a basis for this.
ALSO: All parrots will go for the highest energy food first, so if you provide the food you want them to eat, that's most important. My Maya eats until she's not hungry any more, and then she stops. If I filled her bowl with nutriberries, she would eat them ALL very quickly, so I make sure that she always has her KAYTEE's pellets and then I monitor the amount of everything else I give.

In this house Oscar eats too much.. but how do you stop a little Quaker when he says he wants some? I have such a hard time saying no. He eats a lot of vegetables (peas, Romaine lettuce, boiled potato, carrots), and almost any vegetable I have on my plate. For fruits he likes green grapes (peeled of course... lol) apples and bananas. For his seeds he has 80% pellets (which is about one hand full and 20% seeds (small amount). He also loves things like pasta, spaghetti, seeded bread, crackers, and for treats he has things like tiny piece of marshmallow or a drop of honey. Not much into the sweets... but he loves salt so I have to be very careful that he does not get too much.
He usually eats mostly in the morning seeds, pellets and Romaine lettuce... in the afternoon he will try my lunch and if he doesn't like it he will have fresh peas... supper again... whatever is on my plate and in between meals he has as many pellets as he wants.
My bird is fat... and I will probably get a stern talking to when I go the vet in a couple of weeks... so maybe they will teach me how to say no. (maybe??)
Yes Oscar has free reign however, because he does not fly he tends not to go too far. He can climb down his cage if he wants but seldom does. He has one cage in the living room and my house is split level ... so the other cage is in the kitchen. They are joined together with a bong... so he can go back and forth. (which he does as he is always following me...lol) Anywhere he wants to go, he will flutter his feathers... peck at me twice... and point with his head the direction he wants to go... and I bring him there. Spoiled huh.

I appreciate your answers though wasn't really looking for what to feed rather how much quantity wise. It is my understanding as well that in the wild at least on East coast they eat grass dandelions crab apple seeds Holly berries native leaf and fruit buds.
Personally I have to wonder about reading they gorge themselves cause they seem to do well on their own. I would think foraging activities would be great for them as is with most parrot's.
One of my babies Noah a cockatiel my he rest in peace was spoiled fully flighted and though he did spend time flying though preferred mamas shoulder most of the time or at least nearby to chatter and visit. I felt better knowing if he needed to get away from danger like toddler hands it would be better for his safety. And it was most definitely. He even rode on my shoulder to take our the trash regularly which he enjoyed our shirt outdoor walks.
He taught me cockatiels could talk I had no idea... I was quite surprised when I walked in the door he only said it to me wolf whistle followed by I love you...pretty bird was another phrase he liked along with Andy Griffith and playing his phone prank on me....phone rings only to find out it was Noah... quite ingenious actually he figured out how to get me to come when he wanted. He was spoiled for sure though due to flight if he was tired or wanted space he flew to cage...if he wanted mama he flew to me..he also taught me how smart birds really are by potty training himself he put two and to together rather quickly I poop on Mama I lose shoulder time he chose to fly off to do his business and return rather than lose time with me. Pretty smart lil guy 18yrs and still miss my baby..he actually slept with me one night he refused to step up to go to cage and curled up under my neck I told him that I didn't think it was a good idear..I meant to let him cuddle for a bit and then put him to bed accidentally fell asleep he woke me up pecking lightly when I tried to get him to step up to go to cage he outmaneuvered me a curled back up he definitely let me know if I made him uncomfy lil Silly boy.. didn't make it a habit but was an awesome memory for sure.
The one we were looking at was sold they are supposed to have more soon probably going to look at some cockatiels as well though I know that will be hard for me maybe silly but Noahbird was just as much one of my children and still miss him after so many years. ...

Cupcake sort of has free reign. She's flighted, and when we are home, she is out of her cage, with very little exception. She obviously cannot do everything she pleases, or go unsupervised, but she goes where she pleases, for the most part, which hinges on the fact that she generally wants to be where we are. We will allow her to sit and relax on the bathroom door by herself when we are around the corner in the living room, but she knows that if she decides to break our trust and start exploring the bathroom while we aren't there, and we catch her, she won't be allowed to sit on the door, so she is generally a good girl and stays on the door. That bathroom is bird-proofed, anyhow, so it isn't much of a gamble. But aside from that scenario, she generally chooses to be where we are. If she does happen to decide to go check out a different room without us, someone will go retrieve her. If she is going between people in different rooms, we communicate to make sure that someone knows where the bird is. So, she doesn't truly have free reign, but I think she feels at least some sense of autonomy In general, she does pretty well with sticking to the rules... about as much as you can expect from a parrot. I'd love to give her more freedom, but I don't really think there's any practical way to do that in our circumstances. But I generally feel like the more she feels in control of her destiny, the happier she is. Cupcake can eat as many pellets, cucumber slices, or lentil sprouts as she wants. Other things are given more sparingly. Quakers do pig out, so you want to make sure that fattening foods are limited. We give her pumpkin seeds as treats, among other things. I do think I need to give her less of them, actually. I need to weigh her again, come to think of it.

Went to look at cockatiels they too are gone while talking to the parrot's this little sweetie keeps coming over to corner of his cage to sing to me so I willingly went over to say hello and tell him he was a pretty bird too. He got more excited and sang more we sang back and forth. When I left to chat with the other birds and he comes back over and serenaded me to come back... again and again... I left... I am probably a good ball but after an hour or two I was crying I already missed the little guy....
I may eventually get a Quaker but for now my heart was stolen by a sweet yellow American Singer Canary... looking forward to working with him he is already quite at home enjoying his flight cage singing and flying flitting back and forth. Most people don't realize you can tame them just takes time and patience.
Welcome home Sebastian my little flirty serenading maestro!!

Welcome to Sebastian. When I was a small boy, my family had a canary named William, whose name got changed to Billie when "he" laid an egg. Canaries can be a joy to live with, and I'm sure you'll enjoy Sebastian's company.

Couldn't believe it myself seemed so silly last night tearing up...I didn't bawl mind you... I knew he had stolen my heart at that moment.
He wasn't so keen on being taken out nails clipped and put in a dark little box...
Got him a flight cage (though already making plans for a custom cage with more room to fly)... eventually if I can win Sebastian's trust he will get outside cage time. I am excited to work with him though I am going to try to give him a few days to settle in possibly a bit longer before working with him on hand taming. Fixed up his cage and opened box in cage he initially gave a hiss... I would have too being that small after his ordeal to see this large creatured head porting at me from the only way out... I sat down a few inches away and he came out fairly soon looked around in what I imagine was birdie AWE a huge cage compared to the one he'd been in. 18x30 I think I know it's 30 wide. He courageously checked out his new home found his food water and cuttle bone in record time. He didn't mind me hanging out close by we sang back and forth.
I have no idea if he's a great singer as I'm no expert on Canaries but I enjoy his song...played some Canaries videos for him which he enjoyed. When generator turned on I was concerned he might freak out but nooooo he started mimicking the whirring rumble turning it into beautiful music and happily hopping around snacking away and he enjoyed a carrot snack which he went gaga for!!
Yes Sebastian seems to have settled in a bit and seems happier than at the pet store as he really enjoying the larger living quarters.
Thank you for being sweet and for your help I was afraid y'all would be upset thinking a canary seriously?
So glad for the kind welcome home too Sebastian! Thank you!

Hey, a bird-friend is a bird-friend. They come in all shapes and sizes, but they are all quite adept at capturing our hearts Sometimes you just know. And any single one of them finding a loving forever home is a reason to celebrate, regardless of variety Glad you and little Sebastian found each other.

I LOVE canaries! They are great little birds and we have about 15 in our outdoor aviary. When I was growing up I had a canary which we used to let out to fly around the house and he was fine. Just be aware that because they can fly quite quickly and are little birds - you need to be careful with things like closing doors and ceiling fans etc. (you probably already know this stuff). When I was a kid my mum accidentally closed the fridge door on my canary, Nelson (I was at school at the time)...she felt horrible about it, but these accidents can happen, of course.

No ceiling fan here. Sebastian won't get total freedom unless I get an aviary going....someday sigh..
Going to let him get adjusted for a few I visit him a few feet away sometimes closer depending on what his body language is telling me. After a bit I'll start getting him used to my hand for a few minutes each day with a treat until hopefully he decides it's safe and fun. Then I will work up to letting him in a small room with me and work on landing areas and recall and returning to cage on his own. It will take awhile I am sure as they are more skittish being so small.
After a song I say beeeautiful Sebastian beeeautiful and he immediately sings another he also likes hearing me say zucchini yuuum lol and pretty bird loves his morning baths. Looking for a place to get grass not sprayed and dandelions as they like to roll around on them...he's definitely loving the new quarters and sliding down the bars.
He's a sweetie for sure!
Biteybird I would love to hear about your aviary and how you set one up.
