She loves to "pretend" to talk... she'll make buzzy mumbling sounds as someone else is speaking, especially when she is on the person's shoulder, which is extremely cute... but as far as actually being able to functionally communicate goes, it is almost nonexistent. You never know, Aaron - Cupcake may surprise you and decide she's ready to talk one day. Bonnie often does buzzy, mumbling noises to accompany my hubby or I speaking words that she can't yet say. I wouldn't be surprised if Cupcake is just absorbing everything and taking her time about it.

Jan, just keep remembering how sweet the sound of "monkey breath" was right after Shah's little sojourn in the wild. Maybe you can learn to love it again. Very easy for you to say Easttex but I take very good care of my oral hygiene and take offence at being accused of being a Monkey Breath. I never say anything about his breath!!!! He is just plain rude and don't think I should have to take that from Mr Budgie Bottom. Just hold on a minute. If Shah started calling you Hippopotamus Butt, sure, you could assume he was insulting you. But I ask you, have you ever actually smelled a monkey's breath? I haven't. Maybe it is redolent of roses or newly cut grass. Though I would imagine that breath quality would vary from monkey to monkey.

She doesn't seem very motivated to participate in more nuanced communication... She has mastered the art of the grump, however.

I'm with aaron, little Maya has shown no interest in learning to talk. I think she believes human language is beneath her. She has, however, learned to 'give me a kiss'. If I pucker up and offer her a kiss near her face, she will make the kiss noise at the same time as I do. It's adorably cute.

Bonnie does the kissing noises the same as Maya, also when my hubby leaves for work and we say "I love you", she'll do a kissing noise straight after we say it. Cheeky little girl. Also zip noises and 'raspberries' when I blow air onto her face. You never know, these sounds could be Maya's and Cupcake's precursors to speech.

Shah says "gotta kiss" so I make the kissing sound when he says it. Then I ask him if he has a kiss and he makes the kissing sound. Very cute

I loved reading about Bonnie. As I battle to write this, battling Pidge for the keys I took a break and introduced him to the word scratch. He doesn't talk yet but when he chatters to himself I occasionally hear approximations of the things I repeat to him. He is only 4 months old I think. He certainly loves the demonstrations of what scratch means LOL.
He sounds at the level of your bird Aaron.
Oh bugger! he's just pulled the ear off a wooden cow pencil holder. While I checked that He ran off with my Enter key. Sigh.. life is never going to be the same

Pidge sounds like he could give Bonnie a run for her money.

Cupcake has some other noises she makes... she imitates the spray bottle that I clean the counter with... And she has a "funny" noise that she uses when it seems she is trying to make a joke of some sort. It sounds like a goofy quack. I don't know how else to describe it. She mumbles a lot when she's nervous, and laughs a lot when she's nervous as well. She's a silly one. But not a dynamic communicator And yes, pidgesmum, life will most certainly never be the same But it sounds like your little one has a lot of speaking potential at 4 months old Cupcake is over five years old, so she's probably not going to start talking, but maybe!

Pidge can say "good boy" but only when we are having a shower. He plays dare devils by jumping on my head while I'm in there until he gets a bit wet. Otherwise he chats to me from the shower rail. I think he feels it is safe to talk with the sound of the water in the background. He chats to himself all afternoon and I think he must have an amazing fantasy life. He can copy my laugh now, usually when we are playing "attack" games.

I miss playing the "Ow" game with Bonnie (I pull her beak between my thumb and forefinger, or lightly pull her tail and say "ow", then she nips me lightly and says "ow"). I stopped playing the game with her because she is still biting my husband WAY too hard - got him on the earlobe on Wednesday and it bled all over the place. I wasn't there, but apparently she was being really good, then he left the kitchen and she followed him, landed on his shoulder and CHOMP. She wouldn't let go, then when he finally got her off his ear she kept flying at his face...teatowelling required. Bonnie is the same as Pidge, in that she does her best talking routines when there's background noises or she thinks we're not listening. They are so funny.
