Ollie rocks back and forth when sleeping in the afternoon, is this normal? He does it fast then does it slower till he stops then falls asleep.

I don't think I've seen that behavior in a parrot before, but that's not to say it isn't normal for Ollie. It actually sounds like he's rocking himself to sleep. If Ralph or Scooter decide to take a nap during the day, they both just doze off. I've never watched them sleep at night because if I'm around to see them, they refuse to go to sleep. Maybe someone else here has a parrot who does what Ollie does...

It really does sound like he is rocking himself to sleep. How cute Like Gary, I never see Shah going to sleep as he wont sleep if I am in the room so I am not sure if this is normal behaviour or not - or maybe it is just something that Ollie likes to do.

Phew I was worried it was tail bobbing but he doesn't bob his tail except when he's dancing or shakes it when I tell him not to do stuff as if to say "Haha!" He was sleepy today b/c he stayed up late b/c the budgies kept eating and he won't sleep unless if their asleep so it might've been that.

I can't help you with this question either, as (like the others) Bonnie doesn't sleep when we are near her. I usually transfer her to the sleeping cage then immediately cover it, so we don't get to see her "going to sleep" process.

Like Bonnie, Cupcake doesn't sleep when she's near us, but she does rock a little bit when she is very sleepy. I always assumed it was just "sleepy balance", but either way I don't think it's something you need to worry about. Tail bobbing is very obviously a tail-focused motion... if the rest of him is moving, that's not tail bobbing.

All I know is that Oscar loves to sleep on my chest or belly... cause he feels that motion of up and down... and it just rocks him back to sleep. Perhaps this is something similar.

I wish Cupcake would sleep on my chest! She definitely likes to sit there, and she will put up with me sleeping while sitting on my chest for hours on occasion at least (usually I only get away with an hour...). But she never falls asleep herself.

Ollie rocks back and forth when sleeping in the afternoon, is this normal? He does it fast then does it slower till he stops then falls asleep. I know I'm really late responding. Yoshi used to do this when he would nap. He would slightly rock forward and backward. It worried me at first, but nothing else seemed wrong.

Aaron, I cant believe Cupcake lets you sleep. If I accidentally fall asleep when Shah is sitting on me, I get bitten and screamed at.

I guess I'm lucky as well, in that both yoshi and melly will chill on my shoulder if I fall asleep in my chair with them. Just not both at the same time, or they'll start fighting.
Melly will generally burrow her way behind my neck or in my shirt and chill.

Aaron, I cant believe Cupcake lets you sleep. If I accidentally fall asleep when Shah is sitting on me, I get bitten and screamed at. We are remarkably lucky with her, I know. She is a very chill Quaker. And continues to chill out further with age... over time I would say her tolerance for such "down time" increases steadily. I'm really not sure why. I don't give our particular method of caring for her all that much credit.. it just seems like her nature to be relatively calm, and her hormones are easily controlled as long as we stick to a handful of rules and don't deviate from them. But she's still a Quaker. When we spend too much time sitting around, say on a lazy weekend day, she will tire of it and start to get grumpy, especially over vacation periods where we are staying at home but not working, and this sort of thing goes on for multiple days... In multi-day scenarios, she will get fairly testy. She actually really wants cage time to herself with nobody home for at least a few hours every day. In fact, if we leave and come back too soon, especially if she is already grumpy when we leave, we will get silence, or even a grumpy noise upon our return, when normally we get an immediate greeting, sometimes quite emphatic, upon entering the front door. She definitely loves us and wants to be around us, but I think she finds us somewhat exhausting. It's rather endearing.
