I have had a play gym for almost 10 years now and my birds still prefer playing on or near me.
Do your fids have a play gym or do they just play on your stuff. My birds favorite hang out area is my desk near my computer because that's where I am. I don't have a lot of space so we don't really spread out so that's why I am wondering why they like being in such close proximity of me when they are out of the cage.

Ralph has a playstand that I made from a large magnolia branch, set in an unused Christmas tree stand. It has lots of side branches to perch on, and toys hanging from it. He rarely sits in it anymore, and would rather play in the kitchen or sometimes in the bathroom. Scooter the CAG that I adopted in April still isn't ready to venture beyond her cage, but someday she may decide to use the playstand. It's not unusual for a parrot to want to be close to their human companions when they're not caged. Besides wanting to know where we are at all times, they enjoy being close to us, even when they're not getting direct attention.

All the cages have toys and perches attached to the tops. We have two boings and a swing in their room for shared use (though Clyde refuses to let anyone else use HIS boing, for the most part, which is why we have two, LOL). The tiels are fond of playing on the knick-knack shelf and knocking things off in the process, which is why I stopped putting anything breakable on the shelf. Rocky 'Too has a playstand, but it's really meant for a cat. A friend of Hubby's builds and sells them.

Peppy never had any use for a play gym. He wanted to be in his cage, or on me.

Ducky has a portable playstand. He enjoys it when I take him upstairs to the family room or the bedroom and he can hang out and attack the toys on it that he doesn't get to play with often. Downstairs he's either on me or my BF or his cage. So it's a treat when he gets to go upstairs with us. In the bedroom, though, the playstand has to be near my dresser so he can go argue with the bird in the mirror periodically. As smart as he is, he hasn't figured that out yet. Lol.

Maya has a portable play gym that wheels about. She will play on it, but she frequently hops onto me for reassurance and cuddles. Sometimes she prefers to be on it, messing about with her toys, but it has to be near where I am. If I leave the room, she wants to come too. I don't mind, but the play gym does mean I can do a bit of writing and Maya can occupy herself while still in my company. She's a good girl

Ollie is too scared to come out of the cage yet but my late budgies used to play inside a kids play castle or farm that we put on their cage and they loved it.

My brother made Pidge a magnificent play gym and Pidge shows no interest other than to sit on top of it. I raised the whole gym, put foraging parcels in and made excited noises but no interest. My brother keeps asking how it is going and I have to lie. It is also quite big and takes up a lot of space. I'm enclosing my front verandah next week and hope it'll go there.
