Hello everyone!
Maya is about to come on a journey with us to go and see my Grandparents. It is a long journey and we are going by car. We are travelling from the south of England right up to Scotland. The journey usually takes 7 or 8 hours. My mum is driving and has assured me we will stop often for Maya to come out of her carrier and get some food and water if she doesn't want to eat while we're moving. I am packing: - Her holiday cage, three different perches, four different toys and her food and water bowls - many teatowels -our first aid kit - my birdie first aid book - her KAYTEE food - her nutriberries - a little chilled tub of sprouted seeds - a plastic protection mat - newspaper - hand sanitiser - my cage sanitisers (I use poop off and avisafe) - our harness - trick and treat back
Do I need to bring/consider anything else? Maya will be travelling in Northern Parrots version of the Pak-o-bird, a nice, wide travel carrier that can strap into the car. It is big enough for her to stretch her wings out in and I'm going to find a way of hanging a toy for her to play with. We're staying for a week, my Grandad LOVES birds and cannot wait to meet Maya. I can make her plenty of veggies while we're away and she'll be with me most of the time. Is there anything else I should do/think about?
Thanks guys!

Looks like you've made a thorough list, from food to water to toys. Hope you have a nice holiday.

Quick update! We're driving past Lancaster now, nearly there, just a few hours to go. Maya has been SO WELL BEHAVED! I can't believe how good she's been! We've stopped regularly to make sure she's fed and watered but she's been snacking on the way as well, napping in her carrier and quacking along to the music. What a lovely little birdie

Wow! Maya's car ride behavior is impressive. I don't think Cupcake would make it more than an hour before she started grumping. Maybe she would stop once she realized the car ride wasn't ending... or maybe it would escalate. We've never tested a ride longer than an hour Regardless, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't go as well as it has for you

I have noticed that Quakers do travel quite well. Oscar sat on my hand for 9 hours one trip and he was fine except my hand was cramped really bad... lol... that was my own fault of course.
Happy holidays louise.

Shah will be going on a 3 hour trip next week - I am expecting the worst. He used to travel well but the last time I took him away, he was out of control. I had to keep stopping to see if he wanted a drink, something to eat, a scratch, a nap - I needed a crystal ball to figure it out. And when I say I had to keep stopping, I mean every 10-15 minutes. The cockatiels will be travelling with my sister - Pippin actually screams continuously in the car - haven't told her that yet - maybe I wont mention it Glad Maya is doing so well - lucky you.

Oh no, Jan! That's stressful. I often find people are a lot more accommodating of helping out with parrots BEFORE they learn about the screaming I really wanted to have Maya out in the car but I was worried about her spooking and causing a crash. And she's only just a year old yet so the travel behaviour may well change! She's settling very well though and my grandad is very taken with her. He's asked every restaurant they know if it's alright to bring the parrot out for lunch, and madly, one of them said yes!

I'm sure you've taken everything that's needed. Bonnie travels very well too - I think it's because her humans are within sight at all times, preferable to us going to work and her being alone. Hope you enjoy your trip!

Jade had to endure a three-hour car ride to bring her home when we first got her, and she threw one fit after another and tried to chew her way out of the carrier and didn't settle down until it got dark, but she was wide awake and rarin' to go the moment we got home and took her inside. Clyde's only ever been to the vet and the short ride between our old house and the one we're living in now, and he didn't have time to get really wound up, but he was NOT HAPPY.

Just a quick update, Maya was so exceptionally good on the way back. We hit a lot of traffic on the way back and had to take a winding detour. As a result, she was in her pak-o-bird for nearly five hours (as opposed to my limit of two and a half) before we stopped for the first time. She got quite agitated about this, which caused me a lot of stress as I hate hearing her upset. But once we'd stopped and she'd come out for a little while, she then settled down very well. She has been so incredibly well behaved. Understandably, she's been a bit territorial since we've been back and has done her normal piercing warning call whenever david has come into the room with her cage in it! It's half past ten now and she went to bed an hour and a half ago to have a well earned rest. I'm very proud of my lovely little girlie. She is such a diamond and enriches my life so much. I know I haven't had her long, but there's not a day goes by when I'm not really grateful she's in my life

I've copied your list for traveling with my Quaker and my Green Cheek, they both actually love the car, and even on the 4 and 1/2 hour drive back from the breeder on the day I brought her home Lita excitedly looked out the window all the way home! I went the long way home when I got her in West Hempstead, NY out on Long Island, through Long Beach, The Rockaways, and finally to Coney Island, stopping at each beach to get her out on her harness and show her the beach and ocean...she absolutely loves to see new things. But I've never had them on a LONG trip, so I'll now be prepared..thank you!
Is your Quaker gray in color? Maybe it's just the lighting in your avatar pic but she looks gray? I've never seen a gray quaker, only green, blue, and yellow...she's very pretty either way!
