Hi everyone,
I have 2 questions so added them into one post hahaha!
Firstly Skye preens Loki ALOT!!! But it's not very often Loki gets to do the preening. Is this because Skye is dominating???
Secondly I am travelling to Melbourne next Thursday to help my sister move house and I am taking Loki with me but leaving Skye home with hubby. The road trip from my house is about 7 hours. Any tips for long distance travel with Quakers?
Thanks so much!

Just make sure Skye is not pulling Loki's feathers out. As to tips for travelling - take ear plugs. You will also be expected to know what the yells are for - do they want something to eat, something to drink, a scritch or a sleep. As Loki is new to travel, he might be no problem at all.

Peppy and I make 8 hour trips, but they are 4 hours driving, usually 3 at the hospital, and then 4 hours back. He's a very good traveler and doesn't make a lot of noise. Loki may not be too interested in drinking and eating, so you might watch for that. I'd especially want to make sure he's taking in water. If you have to, make a stop and encourage him. I always take something to cover the front of Peppy's travel cage, so he doesn't get blasted by the heater or a/c. I always have him in the front passenger seat, strapped in, so we can keep each other company. He's a good travel buddy.

Thanks Jan. I'll keep an eye out to made sure Skye isn't pulling feathers out. Didn't think of that! Yes I'll stop a few times over the trip. I'm not great at long distance travelling myself (usually hubby drives and I sleep lol!!) So we'll stopping a few times and I'll make sure I offer food and water. The cage I have I'll probably leave the food in there and just offer water each stop. Easttex thanks, I'll remember to strap his cage in. My son Joel is coming (need the muscle to help move my sister's stuff lol) so he'll have to be a back seat passenger I'm afraid. I'll definitely keep an eye out for the drinking. Great idea to bring something to cover him from the a/c... Didn't think of that either lol! He's still not talking pretty much at all (or screeching) so may just be quiet for the car trip lol! Of course I KNOW that will change lol!

Bonnie is good at travelling, in fact, she seems to love it. Normally she's on the back seat (when the front passenger seat is all the way back it wedges the cage nicely so there's no way it can budge). If I am the only human in the car she gets to be on the front passenger seat and I put the seatbelt around the cage - it JUST fits! I make sure she has some pellets & nuts and a tiny amount of water (too much & it spills everywhere). When we travel Bonnie does all her best whistles and words! Sometimes she has a squawking phase but we can usually divert her back to whistles or laughing noises - although this can take up to 30 mins. Sometimes we play music in the car and if she doesn't like it she will squawk to tell us.

So Maya (once Byron, but turns out he's a she!) is a pretty good traveller but has never been on long journeys before. It's good to get them use to it young though! best of luck!

I take my birds with me a lot. When I was living in the states, we made several 12 hour trips (San Antonio to San Diego.) They do seem to love it, because they waste no time to get into the travel cage. Some may disagree, but I leave the cage door open so Lola can walk around. I find that she spends quite of bit of time perched on the head rest or my shoulder - watching everything outside. Depending on your travel cage, if you could put a couple of foot toys, and a hanging toy in the cage - that may also provide entertainment for Loki. I use a "rodent" hanging water bottle - the one with a ball at the bottom to prevent the bottle from emptying, that helps eliminate spilling water in the car. Also remember, if it's hot outside, whenever you leave Loki in the car alone (bathroom breaks etc.) - crack the windows open a bit so the inside of the car doesn't overheat and if it's cold, you should cover the cage so the temperature inside the cage stays warmer longer. And if you eat inside a restaurant, ask if you can bring Loki in with you. Since travel cages are usually small - they probably won't mind. You could order some fresh fruit and/or veggies to keep Loki occupied and help make the trip more enjoyable too. Good luck with your trip and drive safely to get there and to get home.

Like Pascuba, we used to let Bonnie out of the cage inside the car whilst driving - until she started targeting & biting hubby. Unfortunately, we felt it was too unsafe after this started, so now she only comes out for a break when the car is parked and hubby is outside (so I stay in with her). It's a pity, 'coz we used to like watching her explore in transit.

Well we arrived safe and sound in Melbourne!! Coming from a reasonably small country town it freaks me out driving in Melbourne!!! But I did it and all's well Loki was a dream traveller!! No worries at all. He had a little chuckle and only one or two little squawks!! He's really not very noisy at all (well so far anyway)!! Thanks everyone for all your advice!

That was great to read all these traveling tips. Norman and I will be traveling for a visit at my parents house (which is only 2.5hrs away). I have measured his traveling cage and it just fits on the passenger seat with the belt around. I think I am going to use a light sheet to cover the cage except the side facing me so we can keep each other company.
I hope Norman likes to travel, least he is still young so hopefully he can learn to like it haha

You might not need the sheet; in fact Norman may enjoy being able to see all around his cage. I think you'll find he will still keep you company! We just got back from camping for 3 days (it's a long weekend in Australia as today was ANZAC Day) and Bonnie, as usual, really enjoyed her car travel. She preened a lot, practised her whistles and some words and did some joyous screeching now and then. We listened to the flautist James Galway and a bit of Elton John and the cellist Yo Yo Ma. She wasn't as keen on Joe Cocker, unfortunately.

Ha, ha Biteybird. That Bonnie is a real character. Shah actually watched Game of Thrones with me (the new season started today) and he was extremely well behaved - no screaming because he was bored - I did promise him he would see some distant relatives (the dragons) but they didn't show up
