Here in the Northern Virginia/Washington DC area we are under a blizzard warning, starting in the next few hours. They are calling for 30 inches of snow, which is a huge amount for this area. We've got extra food and lots of devices charged, lots of blankets and such... Just hoping the power doesn't go out!!

I assume that means everyone got to stay home today. Bonus for Cupcake! I don't know how reliable your power is there, but if you were here you could absolutely count on losing it. If you do get snowed in for a while, just remember, don't watch The Shining.

This storm is all over the news here too... You guys are in for one heck of a snow fall. What will you do without power? Do you have a generator? Somehow you need to keep warm. I hope things work out for you. Best of Luck.

Up where I live, that sort of storm typically hits us once or twice every winter. It's no fun here, and even worse for you, where it is more of a rarity. Hope you weather the storm safely and you don't lose power.

Stay safe and warm! I hope your power stays on. I see that it has started, you will wake up to a winter wonderland tomorrow!

Oh yeah, everybody got to stay home today . Cupcake did like that. So far we have about 8 inches, I would say... It is coming down very hard. I really hope the power does not go out, but if the forecast is correct, and it sure seems like it, I'd say there's a pretty good chance of power loss. But luckily we live in a highly insulated apartment building that retains heat very well... So it will stay pretty warm in here for a while even with the power out. Thus far this winter we have not even had to turn the heat on yet. We have all of the windows insulated to slow that process down. It should be fine. Worst part will be trying to keep my fish alive if the power is out for many days. I'll keep you guys posted on how it goes from here

I heard about the blizzard coming your way on the news this morning - and I live in Sydney, Australia so I figured it had to be big given that we were hearing about it. Hope you are okay.

All is still fine here! I'd say we're well over a foot of snow now, but the power is still on! Staying warm! Thanks guys!

Yeahhhhhh... that is good news Aaron... especially about the part everybody gets to stay home. Wow... It is hard for a northern like me to imagine that it is almost the end of January and you have not turned the heat on yet. Lucky you!!

The federal government essentially closes down. I wonder if anyone will notice?

Haha.. yeah, Julianna.. It's not that it hasn't been cold outside, though... It's just our building retains heat so effectively, and we have so much electronic stuff in this apartment, we're generating lots of ambient heat all the time. Still, it's pretty crazy that we haven't had to use the heat, I admit. The federal government can be such a slow moving mutant anyhow, it's hard to tell the difference between operating and closed down anyhow, at times

I hope you guys are still keeping warm and the power is still on. Here we only got about 5 inches from that storm (we were more towards the edge of it) but that little but was still enough to make it a level 3 snow emergency for most of the day so most people weren't allowed on the roads at all.

Lol yup, our heat went on the end of September, the beginning of October! You will have to go out in the morning and take some snowed in pics for us. It was very cold here today, but bright and sunny. We still only have a small amount of snow.

Many years ago, my Uncle Don lived in Annandale, Virginia, and they had a winter storm that brought all of 2" of snow. Being from upstate New York, that wasn't a big deal to Uncle Don, so he was one of the few people who showed up for work at the Pentagon that day. This coastal storm is passing us by in upstate New York. They've actually sent snow plows and crews from up here down to Long Island, New York to help out with snow removal down there.

So what happens in the US if everyone is forced to stay home on a work day? Do you still get paid or do you have to take a personal leave day? Just wondering…I've never been in that situation here in Australia, so I don't know what would happen with us.
