i have had him approximately 10 years(3rd owner) he has suffered from seizures (sometimes as often as 1 /month)that affect his left side.normally a very active, talkative bird-2 days ago started sleeping alot, barely any activity-interested in food but even when i put it in his mouth,he eventually drops it instead of chewing.he cannot lift his left leg now-he tries-and that was the one he used to hold his food..i'm afraid he's had a seizure i didn't witness, and he may not recover from.any ideas?thx

I'm sorry to hear about your little buddy's troubles... It's very hard for us to know what is wrong in a situation like this, unfortunately-- it sounds like you should get him to an avian vet as soon as possible. They can probably help with ways to keep him fed while he recovers from the seizure, potentially. I would not wait. Good luck, and keep us posted!

As Aaron said a vet would be your best bet at finding the problem. If he isn't eating you could try giving him some handfeeding formula to get some nutrients into him. We had a cat up until a couple years ago with a problem like this. He had started having seizures often and then began to slow down on eating. He was very old and these problems were due to his age. With the average life span for a quaker being around 30 years the problem could be just because he's getting old.

Sorry about your parrot's problem. A vet visit is definitely in order to find out exactly what's wrong and what needs to be done to correct it.

I am wondering if he has had a stroke. Take your little buddy to the vet as soon as you can. Please keep us posted.

Yes, by all means, take him to a vet! Feeding him is good supportive care, but it's not going to cure the underlying problem. It could be something quite simple and curable with an antibiotic, for example. By the time you can see he is sick, he is very, very ill, so please take him in and don't delay.

I don't know exactly where Manassis is, but think it might be near the D.C. metro area. I looked on the Association of Avian Vets website, and found Laura Maclean in Alexandria. There was no other information about her. It's hard to find an avian vet outside of larger cities, but you can check out the website yourself if you'd like. www.aav.org/search/custom.asp?id=1803 Another option is to call any vet and ask who they recommend for birds. Another forum member, Aaron lives in VA, and perhaps he can give you some information, also. Good luck!

I live in the area-- we go to SEAVS - Stahl Exotic Animal Veterinary Services. They provide excellent care; I highly recommend them. seavs.com/4105 Rust Road, Fairfax, VA 22030 703-281-3750 | info@seavs.com It's probably 20-30 minutes from Manassas if you don't hit traffic. Good luck! Keep us posted!

I have heard of pituitary tumors causing seizures and blindness in birds, Definitely get to the vet and also watch to be sure he can still see, just in case.
Best wishes and I'm sorry you are going through this. We do the best we can to make our birds lives happy and healthy, but sometimes it is out of our hands.

Hey all, this will be my last post, took my boy to the vet,and had to put him down.it was killin me to see him in the shape he was-not taking food or drink-very hard decision to make and of course i held out hope for a miracle, but i knew it was time.he was a tremendous source of amusement,of course-such a happy bird, always ready to play-day or night-always with a 'good morning' to greet the day.hardest thing will be not hearing him say 'merry christmas'at this time of year.i also have an african grey, and the two used to 'talk' to each other-quaker would 'sneeze' and the gray would say 'bless you'..of course the grey says 'where's sqwawky' also(quaker's name) gonna haveta get him to forget that.all in all, considering i 'inherited' this bird,he quickly worked his way deep in my heart.i will miss him terribly, but i will dwell on the fond experiences and memories, rather than the end of his life.thank you to all that responded to my questions, especially aaron for suggesting a local vet-they were great.
