My Quaker was 154g before surgery to remove a mass on his wing and back. The one on his back was never removed becauseche lost too much blood on his wing. Anyway, after surgery his weight dropped to 120 g and the mass on his back started shrinking. Vet sad it's because he lost weight . He was overweight to begin with so vet was happy he had lost weight. So now he is recovering nicely and his weight is going back up. He is now at 129 g and he gains weight quickly. I'm worried about the mass reappearing. I don't know what is causing this weight gain. He is on strictly pellets, never seeds or fatty human food. The only thing I can think of is that he just overeats his pellets . Vet said if his weight climbs back up will suggest portion control . Sounds cruel to do to him . His pellets are always readily available in his cage and he has been this way for 24 years . Any feedback is appreciated.

If the vet recommended portion control, that's probably the route to take. It's really no different from an overweight human limiting their portions of food to control their weight. Not cruel at all, especially if it will mean a healthier parrot.
